Over 300 individuals in Buldhana, Maharashtra, experienced sudden and severe hair loss, traced to wheat supplied through India’s Public Distribution System. Investigations by Padma awardee Dr. Himmatrao Bawaskar revealed dangerously high levels of selenium in the wheat, with some samples containing up to 145 times the safe amount. This contamination has raised serious concerns about food safety and public health, with affected villagers seeing hair regrowth as the crisis subsides. Urgent regulation and awareness regarding food quality are now essential.
