It’s not a controversy. It’s illegal. It violates the federal Privacy Protection Act of 1980, which bans search warrants of newsrooms, reporters’ computers, notebooks, and other unpublished information.
A huge controversy of the Obama DOJ was when it obtained the phone records of Fox's James Rosen, then two AP reporters, to find out who was leaking classified docs.

To LA #Press: if you think you shouldn’t testify in court about cops violating your rights because of the reporters privilege - you should know YOU own the privilege. Not your news org or its lawyers. It’s your choice to testify or not. And it’s your duty to testify.
This is a great admission from the LAPD to say that the First Amendment protects the right of reporters to film gov’t workers in public. Of course, that’s the law. But this “detention” is still illegal. It is illegal to “catch and release” reporters. @LAPDHQ
