I’m very excited to share that my manuscript in Nature is out today! I am honored that our model is a part of the “method of the year” crowd, and with some exciting things to show in the full publication! (Including a new name: heX-Embryoids!) 1/n nature.com/articles/s41586-0…

- Barcode-traced hypoblast fate in human embryo models; - The first blood comes from the hypoblast that contributes to hemoglobin phagocyte-like cells; - CDX2 marks hypoblast blood that sustains oxygen supply in embryos before heart formation; - Erythro-core regulatory network endows erythropoiesis to human hypoblasts and phagocytes. The study was led by @chao_yiming now on job market.

New work by Mia Yang's lab reports evidence of prevalent aneuploidies in human trophoblast stem cells and suggests that chromosomal instability may be a normal feature of placental development. biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

We think that all memory is stored in the brain. But our study published today in @NatureComms shows that all cells—even kidney cells—can count, detect patterns, store memories, and do so similarly to brain cells. My first (co)corresponding author paper!🧵nature.com/articles/s41467-0…

This stunning image won our annual image competition and has made its way to our website. It shows twin chicken embryos with a joint body stained for N-cadherin (magenta), actin (yellow) and nuclei (cyan) and was captured by UCL student Brendan Chiong who visited the @xiongfz lab for a summer placement funded by @CRUKCamCentre.

Curious embryo fact 1/25 The embryo is the only machine that needs to function while it is being built. This is made possible by extraembryonic tissues. They allow the embryo to breathe without lungs and to eat in the absence of digestive organs. #embryo #reproduction

Dear friends who write NSF GRFP rec letters, this year rec letters are due BEFORE the applications, so about 10 days earlier than normal on Oct. 11. Please don't let NSF's deadline change on rec letters screw over the applicants in your lives.
