Gov. Abbott launched a free online course to certify additional New World Screwworm inspectors across Texas. This initiative empowers people, & private industry, to inspect & certify livestock movement, ensuring the safety of our cattle, wildlife, & food supply remains secure.

INSIDE AMERICA'S NWS ERADICATION EFFORT:     @SecRollins toured a sterile fly dispersal zone at Chaparrosa Ranch alongside ranchers, USDA officials, and cattle industry leaders. @TAHC @TPWDnews @TSCRA    The sterile insect technique remains one of the most effective tools for eradicating New World Screwworm and is a central part of USDA's response strategy.

This evening, I hosted a call with Texas media alongside @USDA Under Secretary Dudley Hoskins and Texas animal health officials to provide an update on the confirmed detection of New World Screwworm (NWS) in South Texas and outline our immediate response efforts. We briefed reporters on the aggressive actions we are taking right now in close partnership with state authorities to contain and eradicate the pest and reinforced the fact our food supply remains 100% safe. We are urging producers and animal owners to follow movement restrictions and treatment guidance provided by @TAHC. USDA will continue providing regular updates as we work closely with state partners, industry stakeholders, and producers to stop the spread and protect American agriculture.

On June 3, 2026, TAHC received confirmation of a detection of NWS in Zavala County, Texas. A sample collected from a three-week-old calf with an umbilical lesion was identified and confirmed as NWS by NVSL in Ames, Iowa. Read the full press release here: bit.ly/6-3-26NWS

USDA and TAHC are conducting surveillance using New World screwworm (NWS) specific fly traps. Producers can conduct their own surveillance by looking at their animals as often as possible for signs of NWS. Report any suspicions to a TAHC region office or accredited veterinarian.
