"We want an electoral system the citizens can trust" – Hon. Chikombo
Hon. Chikombo delivered a passionate rejection of Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3 (
#CAB3) in Parliament, arguing that the proposed changes fail to address the real issues facing Zimbabwe's democracy.
According to Chikombo, the Bill does not eliminate electoral toxicity, heal national divisions, or strengthen reconciliation. Instead, he warned that it centralises power and takes decision-making further away from ordinary citizens.
"Election toxicity is not removed by extending terms, but by reforming power," he said.
He argued that Zimbabwe does not need fewer elections, it needs better elections that are free, credible, and trusted by the people.
In one of the most striking moments of his presentation, Chikombo said the Bill "transfers power from the citizens" and sends the message that "their vote is dangerous."
