A win for educators! 🙌🏾
Piloting a phone-free program in our middle schools since School Year (SY) 2022-23 has demonstrated to us the clear benefits of storing students' personal devices during the school day. For SY 2025-26, DCPS will implement a district-wide phone policy: dcps.dc.gov/cellphones 📴

Here are some pictures of our academy seniors presenting their Declaration Day projects. It’s a bittersweet moment, as many have been with us since 10th grade. We’re proud of their progress and excited to hear about their future plans.

I was proud to co-introduce this bill prohibiting cell phones and wireless devices during the school day because it will help us deepen learning for students and mitigate behavioral issues across schools. Several Ward 5 schools already prohibit cell phones during the school day, and the results have been overwhelmingly positive. I look forward to engaging stakeholders as we look to scale these policies across the city.
Today, I introduced a new bill to prohibit cell phones and personal wireless devices during the school day in order to remove digital distractions in the classroom and increase educational outcomes for District students. We must remain focused on supporting a learning environment in all of our schools that will help our students learn, play, engage, and thrive. Removing distracting devices during the school day will better equip our students to focus, empower our teachers to teach, and ensure that our kids are engaging with one another in person which will benefit them and their outcomes for years to come.

🧵Big win for DC youth this wk! My #Mentorship bill passed the Council! This bill creates DC’s 1st-ever community service leave, allowing DC govt employees 1 hr/wk to volunteer mentor or tutor youth & it will connect young ppl who have experienced trauma w/a professional #Mentor.
