I was an engaged Democratic voter when the Republican Tea Party was born in 2009, lit afire by the election of a Black president. I watched it spend years cultivating bigotry, attacking institutions, fomenting hate against minorities, and holding its own party hostage with extreme demands, all before birthing MAGA, destroying the GOP, and remaking the country in its image.
So when I see the seeds of a "Democratic Tea Party" forming, I feel obligated to ask: have you lost your fucking mind?
Reactionary movements follow a pattern. They start with legitimate grievances, get fueled by rage against a common enemy, and end up consuming everything, including the people who started them. The Republican Tea Party is proof. It didn't save conservatism. It devoured it.
Now here's the part that's going to make some of you uncomfortable.
The energy I'm seeing in parts of this movement, like the obsessive focus on Jews, Israel, Zionists, treated as interchangeable targets...has a historical echo that should stop everyone cold. The Nazi party defied easy left-right categorization. It drew from across the political spectrum. What unified it wasn't ideology. It was a shared enemy: primarily Jews. That fusion of nationalism and populist rage killed 6 million Jews and cost tens of millions more lives in Europe and beyond.
I'm not calling anyone a Nazi. I'm saying the pattern, a political movement organizing itself around hatred of a specific group, is one of the most dangerous things in modern history. And I'm asking you to recognize it before it derails you, or worse, it defines you.
Reactionary politics has gotten too many people killed already. Please rethink the energy and goals of your political project before it's too late to course-correct.
