Spectrum works like sound. Bass goes through walls. Treble doesn't. SpaceX paid ~$19.6B for treble. AST got the bass: the carriers' own 700/800 MHz at $0 upfront, 45 MHz owned for ~$550M. The ONLY company authorized for indoor satellite-to-phone. Not SpaceX. Not Amazon.

$ASTS: Sequoia Capital partner Shaun Maguire projects massive growth for SpaceX's direct-to-cell technology. Interestingly, his vision for this space strongly reflects the industry-leading capabilities and pioneering work that AST SpaceMobile brings to the direct-to-device market
Full interview with @shaunmmaguire of @sequoia on @SpaceX IPO. "Orbital compute will be the lowest cost provider of inference compute by at least a factor of three over large scale terrestrial compute. As we've learned in any commodity industry, if you're the lowest cost provider, you are going to crush." We discuss: - the growth trajectory and why retail will likely understand this company better than Wall Street does. - Starship and why it's more technically derisked than the public realizes - orbital compute, an inevitability - thermal engineering advantages - his view on why meaningful launch competition is at least a decade away - why Starlink and direct-to-cell will make SpaceX the world's lowest-cost broadband and mobile provider 👇

$ASTS dual use stuff A lot of talk has been made about FPGA vs ASIC and extra FPGA being requested by Tío Sam. Not really sure that's accurate. The ASIC sats will be used for non-comms use cases. 1/n

$ASTS There were some updates to the Ligado filings last week. One of particular interest was that it appears AST now believes their BB satellites (at least Block 3, maybe all) will have a useful life of 15 years instead of 10! Compared to Starlink with 3-5 years per the S-1.

$ASTS: 🚨SPACEX CONFIRMS THAT THE RUMOURED "PARTNERSHIP" WITH APPLE WAS BULLSHIT AFTER ALL "We do not have direct contractual arrangements with handset manufacturers; instead, we expect MNO partners, as major purchasers of mobile devices, to encourage or drive such adoption. There can be no assurance that these modifications will be adopted on our preferred timeline, or at all. Internationally, we face similar constraints until handset manufacturers implement hardware and software modifications to support the international spectrum authorizations to be obtained from EchoStar. As a result, our near-term international service strategy depends on our ability to establish MNO spectrum partnerships on a market-by-market basis, which does not require device hardware modifications but is subject to the successful negotiation and execution of commercial agreements in each jurisdiction. Until device manufacturers incorporate support for our international spectrum bands into future handsets, we will be unable to offer 5G-like direct-to-consumer service on our own international spectrum."
