Imagine as a Catholic during the Orange season you couldn't drive a southern reg car around... So you avoided it...
This is a gaslighting post
Today, someone I know told me they removed an Islamic symbol from their car out of fear following the riots in Belfast.
Pause and reflect on that for a moment. A person felt compelled to hide a visible expression of their faith because they were concerned for their safety.
At the same time, many immigrants are choosing to stay at home, fearful of reports of illegal roadside checkpoints allegedly set up by vigilantes seeking to identify immigrants in passing vehicles. Whether encountered directly or not, the fear itself is having a profound impact on people’s sense of security and belonging.
It brings to mind some of the darkest chapters of European history, when Jews were forced to conceal their identity in the face of hatred and persecution. History never repeats itself in exactly the same way, but it should deeply concern us whenever people feel they must hide who they are because of intimidation and prejudice.
No one should have to remove a symbol of their faith, culture, or identity in order to feel safe in their own city.
Belfast is better than this. The overwhelming majority of people reject racism, sectarianism, and hatred. Yet the actions of a small number of bigots tarnish the reputation of Belfast and cause genuine fear and harm to innocent people.
Shame on those who spread hatred. Silence in the face of such behaviour only emboldens it.
