Response to today's @NHSEngland stats.
Started in health policy 22 years ago. Been working with these stats on & off for 15 years - mainly on. I cannot remember a worse time for urgent & emergency care.
This is about much more than cold weather, flu, COVID or strikes. Short🧵
Political choices are the root of NHS pressures, not the cold weather or seasonal flu, says @TimGardnerTHF.

ALT Line chart of the size of the NHS waiting list (millions) from January 2014 to January 2024 showing that the waiting list has consistently increased over the past 10 years, with the exception of 2020/21.
This week, Labour pledged to get waiting times for planned hospital care back to 18 weeks, with 2 million extra appointments a year.
Does this mean waiting list will fall by 2m pa? (A: It's not that simple) And are the plans feasible? (A: Yes but...)

There’s been lots of media coverage of Labour party estimates that last year over 120,000 people died while on the NHS waiting list. Is this a good estimate, is it a big number and is it alarming? 1/7
0/3 of these 'new pledges' are actually new.
0/3 are currently being met:
- 28 day pledge met once since April 2021
- 31 day pledge last met December 2020
- 62 day pledge last met December 2015

NEW: How does the public view the NHS on its 75th anniversary?
A thread 🧵 of six key findings with @IpsosUK
1. 54% of people said our national health service makes them most proud to be British, more than our history, our culture, our system of democracy or the royal family.
The NHS managed limited funding growth & rising demand by reducing length of stay & cutting hospital beds.
In a system under major strain, LOS has increased with major implications for flow, productivity and post-pandemic recovery.
Great stuff from @CharlesTTHF et al.
Against a long-term trend of rising hospital admissions, policymakers have had an enduring aim of slowing their growth. So it’s remarkable that between 2019 & 2022 admissions fell by 800k (12%). A thread. 1/16
