There’s a proposal before Merri-bek City Council to (and I’m paraphrasing here) tax the everliving shit out of landlords’ investment properties that’s gonna be discussed on 12 June and I’m so here for it. This proposal would halve council rates for owner occupiers as well as local businesses. Also lol to all the people with Merri-bek investment properties that don’t even live in the LGA because you can’t even vote in the council election if you’re mad about this, but your renters can. There is little discussion on the role of local councils when it comes to the housing crisis but they have such a huge role to play, particularly when faced with federal and state governments doing SFA about it. We all know and agree that federal tax incentives for landlords are ridiculous, but what many councils don’t realise is that they can directly do something about the injustice.
