New update to the Tiro Builder tool, fixing an issue with hinting in CFF fonts instantiated from CFF2 variable build streams. Just finished testing it on a collection of complex Indic fonts build on-the-fly from multiple sources, which still feels magic. github.com/TiroTypeworks/Tir…

Marwari ḍa is an outlier in the Devanagari script, having its stem connection to the head stroke on the left rather than on the right or centered. Wondering if the positioning in the second row might be appropriate, and if anyone has examples to support either positioning?

Just finished reading _Chinese Characters Across Asia_ by @ZevHandel. It’s the clearest introduction I have read about how the Chinese writing system works—dispelling common, long-held misunderstandings—, and how the script was adapted to Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, and Zhuang.

When I visit this site now, I see almost nothing posted by people whom I follow, just a stream of content I didn’t ask for about things I don’t care about, and lots of ads. So don’t expect much from this account any more except occasional shouting-into-the-void announcements.

I’ll probably create a bsky account for announcements of new fonts, etc., but for discussion of type design, typography, font tooling, etc. you can find me—and 700 other active colleagues—at typo.social.

So sad to hear of the death of Prof Michael Twyman, who nurtured many budding printing historians (including me) and whose support of and contribution to typographic history is celebrated in the most recent issue of the 'PHS Journal', demonstrating the breadth of his knowledge.
