Today, we honor the late Commander Ty Martin on his birthday, with posts dedicated to him. On July 11, 1976, Commander Tyrone G. Martin welcomed Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip aboard USS Constitution as part of America’s bicentennial celebrations.

On May 8, 1976, Commander Tyrone G. Martin dedicated the ceremonial “Constitution Grove” in Indiana. There, 150 white oak trees across the 64,000-acre base were designated for the future restoration of USS CONSTITUTION, sustaining "Old Ironsides" for generations.

After his command of USS CONSTITUTION, Commander Tyrone G. Martin’s work with “Old Ironsides” was far from finished. He continued researching the Ship’s history, culminating in tpublication of "A Most Fortunate Ship," a defining narrative history of USS CONSTITUTION.

USS CONSTITUTION is the only commissioned ship in the U.S. Navy without an official designation number. At the request of CDR Ty Martin in 1974, the designation was removed.
