Do you know that you can execute a normal mode command while in the insert mode?
Ctrl-o (normal-mode-cmd).
Try it! Go to insert mode, then:
Ctrl-o b (go back a word)
Ctrl-o dfz (delete to the next "z")
Ctrl-o zz (center the screen)
etc

In awk jargon, each line of a file is a record. You can change the way awk splits files into records, but by default it splits on newlines.
