but the EU can propose a legal obligation to force all platforms to require digital IDs for "safety reasons"
'Stop Killing Games' has failed to secure new EU legislation despite having 1.3 million signatures The EU says it “cannot propose a legal obligation” requiring publishers to keep games playable after they stop being sold commercially

Reminder, piracy is moral if people in charge of studios can disable the game forever

Niestety, milion i 400 tysięcy podpisów nie wystarcza, by przekonać decydentów z Komisji Europejskiej (na siłę z dużej), by wprowadzić jakieś legislacyjne prawa konsumenckie w branży gier. I niebawem będzie też rant.
Video games providers must treat consumers fairly. Under EU consumer law consumers must be informed about the duration and conditions of a video game’s lifespan. If the supply is stopped earlier than the contract states, players should be reimbursed.
Community note
The EU Commission decided against new legislation requiring video games to remain playable after publishers end commercial support, instead enforcing existing consumer laws on disclosing service duration and providing refunds for early termination. ec.europa.eu/commission/pre… citizens-initiative.europa.eu/stop-destroyin…

The EU just rejected proper rules to keep games playable after support ends. Voluntary guidelines instead. This is disappointing. If I buy a game, I should own it and be able to play it for as long as I want — not lose access when the company decides to kill it. Emulation and preservation are going to matter more than ever. We should actually keep what we purchase.
Bad news, The European Commission has responded to the “Stop Destroying Videogames” initiative and decided not to make new laws about games becoming unplayable after support ends. Apparently those sneaky meetings with Ubisoft CEO and other companies did their job. Instead, it plans to bring together consumer groups and the video game industry to discuss better end-of-life practices and possibly create voluntary guidelines. The Stop Killing Games campaign said this was the outcome it expected. It is now shifting its efforts to the European Parliament, where it hopes to add protections for players through the upcoming Digital Fairness Act.

So the EU for once had a chance to do something good. But instead chooses to just ignore the citizens and the initiative. But they keep going on about how impotent citizens initiatives and public involvement is, we are just not suppose to actually want to change anything
Today, the @EU_Commission replied to the European Citizens Initiative "Stop Destroying Videogames". New legislation will not be proposed, but exchanges will be initiated with consumers & industry to improve the management of videogames' end-of-life. link.europa.eu/VXpmTY

Important context: Just before the hearing, video game lobby including Ubisoft organize a private meeting with the European commission without the Stop Killing game initiative gamesradar.com/games/racing/t…

The EU Commission has basically given publishers a pass to continue exploiting customers for now. 1,3 million people demand highly necessary change and they respond with: "Yeah, nah..."
The statement of the EU Commission is the feared disappointment. Still arguing things that have been refuted by @StopKilingGames. Feels like they are playing dumb and wasting time, hoping that the false claims stick. This is not the end, though. ec.europa.eu/commission/pres…

Despite gathering 1.3 million signatures, the EU Comission has DECLINED the legislation proposed by the Stop Killing Games campaign. This is not the end though, as SKG is still seeking to amend it into the Digital Fairness Act through the European Parliament. Here's to hope.
