Yesterday’s race triggered a bit of self-analysis.
I’ve spent most of my life convinced that I hated McLaren and Mercedes because I’m a Ferrari fan.
But I respected Häkkinen. I was fine with Coulthard. I like Piastri and young Kimi Antonelli. I never had an issue with Sainz.
Meanwhile, Irvine, Hamilton, Button, Russell and Norris have all managed to annoy me at various points. The only British driver who seems to get a pass is Bearman, at least as of now.
So after 30 years of following F1, I’ve reached a surprising conclusion: maybe I don’t actually have a McLaren problem or a Mercedes problem.
I may just have a British driver problem.
Sad day. But I’ll take a Hamilton victory in Ferrari any day over a Russell victory in Mercedes.
