Played the tutorial and my first match of Highguard.
❌The Negatives/Not-so-Goods
➡️Main point is many idle moments, especially the "going around the huge map searching for loot/mining".
It feels like it was their attempt at power progression over the game but "how do we ALLOW players to upgrade?" seems to have been a problem.
While games like CS2 and Valorant give you money each round to buy gear, Highguard is one continuous match with "jabs at each other". There's no "here's a reward for your performance" moment, just "timeouts".
➡️The R6 Siege-like base reinforcement didn't really need to exist, but it doesn't really hurt either. It's more chore time before the "main events" though.
✅There are also some core things I enjoyed:
➡️Gunplay seems on point, it's closer to what I wish Valorant had (it has the fun of hero characters but I just can't like the guns movement). Apex-like parkour movement and ziplines, mounts, they felt fine.
➡️I enjoyed the abilities. They help with information or to play around with the map itself, which makes it more dynamic.
➡️Feels like a call back to older games like Unreal Tournament/Halo Capture the Flag mode (the Shieldbreaker Sword), mixed with Battlefield's bomb the objective system.
The pressure of defending a point or delivering the objective was always a fun and rewarding experience and they have it here.
👇 Some other thoughts
While I don't think it's an excellent game, I don't think it's bad either. There was definitely an excessive overhype, mixed with the blend of "everything together in one", which made people expect the worst while having super high standards judgement levels.
➡️Performance was alright, visuals aren't bad, I've heard complaints about blurry everything and I only felt that in one instance.
➡️Lore/depth/worldbuilding felt minimal (maybe with time they'll expand on it, since everything was literally silence up until release).
➡️While 3v3 is few people for such a large map, the clashing is always in medium to small areas and more than 3v3 would be chaotic.
The map being large helps with cover and route variety on the "flag delivery" stage, so you're not just sniped every time on the way, but it's also one of the aspects of the game that throws it off the most.
➡️It's nice that they already have challenges and content you can unlock by playing (and of course, shop with real money), but there's not much in the game to play it more than a week or two.
Usually it's a Ranked Mode that keeps people in the game, which is currently not available (but it states "coming soon"). It has esports potential, but not in its current state.
The devs have a difficult design balance in their hands there.
⚠️ My personal advice ⚠️
Don't blindly hop into heavy criticism bandwagons without experiencing it. People very easily go along with others' opinions but they have no actual idea about it.
Chances are, I won't play it much or you won't either, but maybe it's not the game being bad, maybe it's just not for you or me, and that's okay.
And it's free, maybe give it an open minded try.
