The initial state has been implemented into the global model OpenIFS. The resulting weather systems are realistic and include a realistic representation of upstream and downstream development. Even more, the initial states are exceptionally stable from a numerical point of view.

And 7 different parameters controlling the initial state, for example mean temperature and jet strength, can be varied from the model namelist. This new model configuration opens up endless research opportunities.

Absolutely horrible rain on snow event in Helsinki tonight. After 15 - 20 cm of snow two days ago it’s now above 3C and raining. Freezing rain slightly further north. These events would have been extremely rare in mid February without climate change

Coastal Norway is up to a nasty situation tomorrow, with deep low traveling along a long stretch of the coastline. Winds will reach up to 50 m/s as low as 500 m AGL and combine with unstable stratification near the ground. 40 - 55 m/s gusts are likely in such a setting.
