Grateful for all the new $GME & $EBAY followers 🙏 For those just finding me - I’m Liz, founder of Value Added Resource, an independent platform covering marketplace news, policy changes, strategy, & industry analysis. I bring 17 years of operational experience working with companies selling on eBay, Amazon, Etsy & other marketplaces, giving me both a seller & industry perspective on how these platforms actually operate behind the scenes. 🕵️‍♀️

Shoutout to Value Added Resource reader gottasellemall69 for the reminder! Years ago, eBay curiously added 2 community forum threads to their robots.txt file with explicit "disallow" instructions. These are the only individual threads in the list.🤨 eBay blocked the Internet Archive Wayback Machine's ia_archiver agent from accessing those threads as well. Importantly, this kept these threads from being indexed by search engines or archived on IAWM - but did *not* stop them from being viewed & responded to within the community forum when they were active. That likely indicates eBay wanted to limit public exposure to the topics while avoiding the community backlash that would have occurred if the threads had simply been deleted or censored by moderators at the time. By disallowing them in robots.txt, eBay effectively kept these 2 discussions safely contained within the "walled garden" of the company-owned forum. And since both were pre-2023, they'll disappear once the migration to the new forum is complete.
📢 The eBay community forum is migrating to a new platform June 11, 2026. Move will erase decades of user posts, burying history of long-standing customer service & performance issues at $EBAY as pre-2023 content is set to be dumped down the memory hole.🚩

Reason #8 why brands need real people running social: Because moments like this don’t wait for an auto-reply - and neither does your competition. $EBAY
I'm considering quitting all other jobs, responsibilities, and requirements to just sell stuff on Whatnot and eBay. This isn't likely, but I'm still gonna consider it for a while.

When interested buyers ask me why my $EBAY listings (graded Pokemon and sports cards) are listed for significantly higher than the going market price, I redirect them to the $GME website where the same items are listed for significantly less. My loss is also my gain 😂

Today is the day. 🗓️ All of eBay's global community forums are now set to read-only as migration to a new platform begins, with pre-2023 activity set to disappear down the memory hole once transition is completed.🫥

Interesting points👇about potential conflicts of interest $EBAY board member Aparna Chennapragada might have re: Google & Bing. That being said, Google & Bing Shopping aren't just competition - they also drive traffic, sales & ad revenue $ *for* eBay. So...it's complicated.
One of the most quietly bizarre conflicts on the current $EBAY board is Aparna Chennapragada, who has served as an eBay director since 2022 and sits on the Technology Committee. In October 2023, she became Corporate Vice President of Generative AI at Microsoft, the same Microsoft that runs Bing Shopping, a direct e-commerce competitor to eBay. Before Microsoft, she was Chief Product Officer at Robinhood and before that a VP at Google, whose Shopping vertical is eBay's single biggest competitor for buyer intent. She simultaneously holds deep AI product strategy knowledge from Microsoft's most sensitive roadmaps while sitting on eBay's technology and AI-focused oversight committee. Remarkably, nobody has publicly raised this conflict, despite it mirroring the Marc Andreessen situation that Carl Icahn made a national story out of in 2014. Maybe I'm just paranoid.

More of my thoughts on where Aparna Chennapragada's Google & Microsoft background might fit into broader $EBAY board & governance issues 👇 x.com/ValueAddedRS/status/20…

I've always assumed her ostensible "usefulness" on the board was potential knowledge/relationships to build out the Offsite Ads product ($$$) with maybe some broader search & AI benefit on the side. Obviously in practice the search/AI piece hasn't really helped much.😂 But ads are a different story. eBay lumps all ad products together in earnings reports, so it's pretty opaque where the ad revenue is really coming from. Anecdotally though, I believe cost per click Offsite ads have the lowest adoption of all the Promoted Listings options. But that's not the only way eBay can earn ad revenue from Google or Bing Shopping. eBay automatically opts sellers who use the Promoted Listings General cost per sale model (by far the most widely adopted) into "external placements" - and most don't opt out. The help page mentions "search engines" but importantly those aren't just ads within a regular Google search, they can also be placements within Google Shopping (or Bing etc.) Note the help page also says "Those ads may preempt other eBay-funded marketing efforts we may take on your behalf." That means if you use PL General & don't opt out of external placement, then your listings are likely not being pushed in eBay's "free" feed to Google Shopping - they're only showing up there because they are enrolled in Promoted Listings. In that case, when the buyer clicks through from Google Shopping & makes the purchase, the seller pays the extra % ad fee on the sale. Obviously I don't think that any of what eBay is doing with ads is actually a positive thing for sellers or the overall long-term health of the business. But from the perspective of the rest of the board, it's not really perplexing that they would think someone with her background could help with their cash-extraction advertising schemes. 😂 So in my opinion, the potential "conflict" isn't really around Google or Bing Shopping being a competitor to eBay - again, arguably they really just provide a platform on which many sites compete, including eBay. But corruption can come in many forms and rather than conflict it could perhaps show up as collusion - ie. eBay, Google, and Bing all milking the same herd of ad revenue cash cows dry. Either way, it's pretty obviously at least just another example of how the board's incentives are not aligned with the best interests of sellers, the broader business or long-term shareholder value.

Interestingly, eBay founder Pierre Omidyar funded much anti-Musk Twitter activism in 2021-23. He also has long history supporting pro-censorship activity framed as fighting “disinformation” according to investigative journalists @shellenberger & @mtaibbi. x.com/ValueAddedRS/status/20…
Replying to @ValueAddedRS
There’s currently no public disclosure of any direct funding or connections between W & eBay founder turned "philanthropist" Pierre Omidyar. But Zeiter’s background at eBay, combined with W’s ethos, will almost certainly raise questions about his possible influence - especially since Omidyar has a long history of anti-@elonmusk, pro-censorship activity framed as fighting “disinformation.” For example, Omidyar was a major source of funding for "tech accountability" groups behind boycotts & efforts to stop Musk from buying Twitter, according to @influence_watch.
