I politically identify as center left. While I vehemently disagree with much of what President Trump represents--I am grateful that he escaped with what appears to be minor wounds, and I wish he recovers fully. No one deserves a violent end, in politics or in any other facet of life.
Reflecting on today, my dear hope is that this moment is a wake up call for our country to unify around the notion that we need to learn to disagree peacefully. There is nothing wrong with passionate disagreement around ideas. It's really what makes our country special, in that we have such a long history of debating our ideas in peace.
Please, let this not be the start of a new phase of violence as a norm in US politics. Instead, let today be a reminder that we should all condemn violence, and that politics should be conducted as a matter of civil discourse and peaceful action.
Despite everything I hope for above--I'm really sad right now, and I've never been more skeptical. Hopefully tomorrow brings more optimism.
