Truth to this in VFX. You are up against very passionate people who live and breathe their craft. If you don't put in the hours you won't be able to get to the level necessary to break in.
For 3D students: Most I’ve met simply aren’t doing the hours needed to get into the industry. Studying only 10:00-16:00 every day won’t cut it - particularly since only a portion of the day is spent on actual work.

Thanks @janhebein for the tutorial! I've been learning Houdini for a while but was always intimidated by Karma rendering. Your tutorial showed me that even simple lighting and settings can produce great results. Really appreciate it! #houdini

What is a Houdini Generalist? One of the biggest mistakes artists make is treating software as the objective. In reality, every project is a problem to solve. Sometimes the solution is procedural. Sometimes it isn't. Sometimes the smartest setup is a complex system. Sometimes it's surprisingly simple. The important question isn't: "How can I make this more technical?" It's: "What does this project actually need?" Over the years, working on personal projects, studio work, and challenges like Mardini taught Jan that the artists who improve the fastest aren't necessarily the ones who know the most nodes. They're the ones who finish projects. They make decisions. They iterate. They learn from complete cycles of idea → execution → result. That's what being a generalist means to Jan. Not doing everything. Not being average at everything. But understanding enough areas to move a project forward and make informed creative and technical decisions.

6 Full Projects. Just Houdini. One of the best ways to learn Houdini is by building complete projects from start to finish. In Houdini for Generalists, you'll create: • Planets Orbit - Learn VEX by art directing a solar system • Galactic Rocket - Procedural modeling and Pyro simulations • Clay Environment - Stylized environment creation, materials, lighting • Threads Disintegration - Procedural knit patterns and animated transforms • Fonts! - Typography generation, custom simulations, and cinematic lighting • Jenga Collapse - Art-directable RBD workflows and controlled destruction Each project focuses on practical workflows that can be applied well beyond the scene itself.

got a few questions and dms about the course. this is not about big studio pipelines or super advanced setups. it is about the exact workflow i used over the last few years for client work, studio projects, and personal pieces. a mix of procedural thinking, quick direct modeling, simple setups, and knowing when to optimize versus when to just move fast. this is also the workflow that helped me win Mardini twice, and a big reason why people hire me. if you have any questions, just ask me :)

A new update has just been added to the Particle FX Workshop: Blade Erosion FX In this project, we create a complete shot from scratch of a blade peeling away through dark, high-tech energy to reveal a corrupted version underneath. The update covers: - advanced particle workflows through VEX - vellum peeling and disintegration effects - custom procedural masks through instancing - advanced look development and compositing techniques This update is completely free for everyone already enrolled in the workshop. And if you’ve been thinking about joining, the Spring Sale is currently live with 20% off all courses until May 12.

Learning Houdini isn’t hard because of nodes. It’s hard because most people learn it without structure. - random tutorials - disconnected setups - no real progress A proper workflow changes everything. Spring Sale - 20% off on all courses Ends 12th May

If your pyro sims keep getting out of control, it’s probably velocity accumulation. Continuous emissions = constant acceleration over time → messy, hard-to-direct results. I made a short tutorial showing how to fix this in Houdini using Gas Damp as a counter-force to stabilize your sim without killing the source. Simple setup. Big difference.
