Massive bumphead parrotfish aggregation, with the fish defecating sand in near-synchrony. What a spectacle. Tubbataha, Palawan. This is a video frame grab, I have so much to edit.

Rising temperatures in the Red Sea are placing new stress on marine ecosystems. A KAUST study led by Dr. Matthew Tietbohl (@WhyOceansMATTer) with Prof. @MaggieDJohnson links an August 2023 marine heatwave to a mass fish mortality event along the Saudi coast, affecting at least 54 species. The findings highlight the importance of long-term monitoring and collaborative action to protect biodiversity as the region experiences more frequent heat extremes. 🔗 Learn more in KAUST Discovery: discovery.kaust.edu.sa/en/ar… 🧾 Read the paper: doi.org/10.1016/j.scitotenv.… #KAUSTResearch #BESE #MarineScience #RedSea #ClimateResilience #MarineHeatwave #ScienceForImpact

discovery.kaust.edu.sa/en/ar… Coverage of our recent paper documenting a mass-fish kill in Saudi Arabia. Likely one of the largest single events in the Red Sea, this event occurred immediately after a very intense, heatwave! Too much 🔥🥵🌡️🔥 = many dead fish ☠️🐠🐡🐟☠️
