After Russia bombed a UNESCO World Heritage site and killed Ukrainian civilians, Italy's PM Meloni said it plainly: "We can't look away."
Speaking alongside Japan's Prime Minister ahead of the G7 summit, Meloni said support for Ukraine and the pursuit of peace will be central elements of the summit. She specifically named Russia's attacks on millennia-old symbols of Christianity and UNESCO heritage sites as the reason solidarity is not optional.
Italy and Japan reaffirmed their commitment to defending international law and achieving a just and lasting peace. The G7 will also push to reactivate the negotiating process to end the war.
The G7 is meeting. The Kyiv Pechersk Lavra is still damaged. The timing is not lost on anyone.

Quite the contrast
Watching these Ukrainian drones freely traverse Moscow airspace, one has to notice that they've no interest in striking all the civilian objects that Russian drones regularly target in Ukraine as their mainstays - shopping centers, home-improvement centers, postal warehouses..

ZELENSKYY: Before G7 started, to be honest, we gave message that we are ready to meet with Putin during G7.
Because Trump will be there and Macron will be there, Starmer, and Merz. So, Europeans plus America, this is I think a very good opportunity to meet all together.
And that's why we were able to invite Russian side, and Europe and the United States agreed on it.
But Russia demonstrated again that they are not ready to speak about peace.
That's why we have to be ready to push and pressure Putin more and more until he will end this war.

Western leaders are asking the wrong question about Russia. It is not how to negotiate with the Kremlin or deter a future attack, but how to ensure Moscow is defeated in its war against Ukraine so that aggression no longer appears to be a viable strategy.
A just and lasting peace in Europe will not be built on fear of Russia's defeat, but on the understanding that aggression must end in defeat. We should not fear Russia's defeat. We should fear a world in which Russia comes to believe that it cannot lose.
