I was inspired by the dedication and energy of youth activists working to protect young people from products, including e-cigarettes, vapes and nicotine pouches. These health champions, representing organizations including the @GYV_movement and @TheGGTC, are making their voices heard at the @WHO @FCTCofficial #COP11. They told me how concerned they are by the targeting of children and teenagers by companies that make these products for profit, and the great risk they pose from addiction and eventual use of tobacco products. On #WorldChildrensDay, I encourage all young people to stand up for their health and encourage their governments to strengthen protections against these harmful products.

“It’s time to expose the tobacco industry for what it is—an industry that corrupts, manipulates, and destroys the youth and our nation. If we allow the tobacco industry to interfere, we put the lives of our youth in danger.“ #StayLoud #ExposeTobacco #FCTCSavesLives #COP11

Youth advocates and a group of NGOs from around the world gathered at the Broken Chair monument in Geneva to call for strong action on the tobacco industry on the eve of #COP11. Their message was clear: protect our future, safeguard children, and keep the tobacco industry out of health policy. The tobacco industry is preparing to spin, distract, and delay, and these advocates say: our health is not for sale. #FCTCSavesLives

.@CTFKGlobal, represented by Patricia Sosa, Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, Tanya Hamada, In-Country Coordinator, Philippines, and Alejandra Barrera, Program and Financial Compliance Officer, was honored to meet with the Honorable Benjamin Magalong, Mayor of Baguio City in the Philippines and a distinguished Bloomberg Awardee for Global Tobacco Control, to forge a strategic alliance for public health. Subnational governments are at the forefront of the global fight against tobacco. Our productive discussion focused on empowering local leaders and providing them with the support they need to implement life-saving policies. Mayor Magalong's globally recognized commitment to creating a smoke-free environment is a powerful example of how local action can drive national progress and contribute to global health goals. We are committed to supporting these local champions who are dedicated to protecting the next generation from the harms of the tobacco industry. 📷: Val Bugnot

Low prices hook kids early. Addiction keeps them spending for life. Tobacco tax breaks that cycle—and gives the next generation a fighting chance. #Y4TC #ProtectTheFuture #TaxTobaccoNow

One of the most important breakthroughs in global public health is celebrating a milestone - it's the 20th anniversary of World Health Organization's Framework Convention on #TobaccoControl, or #FCTC. On the sidelines of #UNGA80, It was a privilege for me - on behalf of the @WHO Western Pacific Region - to look back at the FCTC's achievements, and to look ahead at the work that remains to be done, both in my region and around the world. The WHO FCTC stands as a beacon of what’s possible when science, political courage and international solidarity converge. It’s a lesson we must carry forward – especially now, in a world that is more interconnected, yet more vulnerable. Over the past two decades, #tobacco use has declined in many countries. Public health has gained ground. And in our @WHOWPRO Region, the momentum is real. I think of Australia’s bold plain packaging law. Singapore’s forward-thinking ban on new nicotine products. The Cook Islands’ rapid reforms – raising taxes, amending laws, and declaring tobacco-free islands. These and other 'Best Buys' are courageous actions, often taken with limited resources, but driven by unwavering commitment. Yet, as we celebrate these victories, we must also confront today’s challenges. The generation born in 2005 – the year the FCTC came into force – is now 20 years old. They’ve grown up with fewer smokers, but they’re still being targeted. A new wave of products, slick marketing and digital influence is trying to normalize nicotine addiction all over again. #ecigarettes, #nicotine pouches, and other emerging products are designed to hook young people. As leaders, as guardians of public health, we must act. We cannot allow history to repeat itself. With thanks to @CR_UK, the @GATC_int, the @ncdalliance and - not least - the @FCTCofficial Secretariat, along with numerous other partners, for bringing us all together. Our resolve is stronger than ever - here's to the next 20 years of a collective effort, indeed a fight that contributes to hashtag#HealthForAll. A fight we must - and will - win. lnkd.in/gK3_7EAE #NCDs #Cancer #FightTobacco

When the tobacco industry says it “welcomes dialogue,” it really means delay, distract, and derail. Health reforms don’t need their input—they need protection from their influence. #ExposeTobacco #TobaccoIndustryInterference #Y4TC
