Last year, $9B of the $35B that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) granted for research was used for administrative overhead, what is known as “indirect costs.” Today, NIH lowered the maximum indirect cost rate research institutions can charge the government to 15%, above what many major foundations allow and much lower than the 60% that some institutions charge the government today. This change will save more than $4B a year effective immediately.
Excited to share the FIRST publication from my lab in Development @Dev_journal ! 😃This work explores how acute inflammation impacts the megakaryocyte differentiation and maturation. Huge thanks to my team and collaborators for their support and insights! @Co_Biologists
Acute inflammation induces acute megakaryopoiesis with impaired platelet production during fetal hematopoiesis

Joy is everywhere at #ASH24 🩸 It's in the exchange of ideas — from session rooms to dinner conversations — in the reunions we cherish each year, and in celebrating our colleagues' incredible achievements. Every moment feels special and fun, and some are unexpected! 🐶🦄
As a new PI, I'm often found in the mouse room as well. It's amusing how, despite everyone donning gowns to enter the mouse room, I sometimes get mistaken for a new student. It even led to some students giving me impromptu lessons on mouse work😄
Our latest lab publication is out! Read about the m6A eraser ALKBH5 controlling energy metabolism in hematopoiesis and leukemia. Congratulations to all the authors and cheers to @YimengLab and to the beginning of his independent career!
I am happy to share our newly published article on Cell Reports, which identifed the role of RNA m6A demethylase ALKBH5 in HSPC energy metabolism through RNA stability control. cell.com/cell-reports/fullte…
Great thanks to my postdoc mentor Stephanie Halene and all the lab members and collaborators! This is a happy ending of my postdoc training and also a good start for my PI career. This will be a challenging journey and there will be lots of fun! 😃
It’s an amazing experience to get the postdoc training in the fab Halene lab with wonderful colleagues and working environment. Will miss you all! Let’s plan our lab retreat across the world!
Today, we celebrated these 2 brilliant scientists, wonderful colleagues & friends, as they open a new exciting chapter in their lives! Thank you @Dr_Yimeng @V1ctorliu 4 ur friendship, support & all the good memories! Can’t wait 2 see the great things you’re going to accomplish!
K-562. It was the first human cell line I ever tried to grow in culture, during training @MayoClinic. It was also the first immortalized myeloid leukemia #cellline, published @BloodJournal way back in 1975. What does the K stand for? #HematologyTweetstory 37 is on cell lines./1
Continuing our extraterrestrial #Hematology#FunFactFriday theme: astronauts develop "space anemia" because their red blood cells are destroyed more quickly after arriving in space. This continues for up to a year after returning to Earth!
Summer season is a good time for reunion! Glad to meet our friends come back from Italy and have our traditional ice cream party to kick off the summer season in New Haven.😀
This is an unparalleled meeting filled with excellent science, delicious cuisine and wonderful culture. Truly an honor to be here! Looking forward to the next one! @Halene_lab@LeeGrimesLab#MyeloidMeeting22
