Remembering Victoria Wood, born in Prestwich, Bury, on this day 1953.
9 Jun 2024
Made in Bury: Victoria Wood (1953-2016) was one of the greatest comic talents the north has produced, which is saying a lot. She was widely admired as a stand-up comedian, singer and songwriter, TV dramatist and actor. 1/10

Berlin march was strong as well. Many small marches starting at various corners of the town. Cold 🥶 but worth it! And needed!

True story: The Yorkshire Post was once bought by conservatives for conservatives. Conservatism as was was the keystone in its founding principles, but conservatism lost its way. Today, conservatism stands for intolerance, division and stupidity stained by dangerous prejudice.
Too many are too polite to say this. But mass ritual prayer in public places is an act of domination. The adhan - which declares there is no god but allah and Muhammad is his messenger - is, when called in a public place, a declaration of domination. Perform these rituals in mosques if you wish. But they are not welcome in our public places and shared institutions. And given their explicit repudiation of Christianity they certainly do not belong in our churches and cathedrals. I am not suggesting everybody at Trafalgar Square last night is an Islamist. But the domination of public places is straight from the Islamist playbook. Trafalgar Square belongs to all of us. It is a national memorial to our independence and our salvation. Last night was not like a televised football match or a St Patrick’s Day celebration. It was an act of domination and therefore division. It shouldn’t happen again.

I’m sick of explaining how people can end up on benefits. I’ll say it again. I had a partner, we had a beautiful family, we could afford our lives. But my partner got sick and died. I was on my own with four kids, 3yr, 5yr, 6yr and 15yrs old. I couldn’t afford childcare, I didn’t have family to help, we were grieving. That’s how we ended up on benefits. Life can be cruel and good for you if you haven’t been through some shit but a lot of us have. All we want is a helping hand, not a punching down. So fuck you to all who judge and don’t know what TF you’re talking about. You’re only ever one tragedy from needing help. I only hope it never happens to you.
