It’s not even like half of these things are bad ideas, I will fully support the fact that a lot of social media is fucking awful for children, it is just flatly being done in a way that is incredibly open to abuse and will likely cause more harm than good

🚨 SUMMARY: The UK's social media ban for children from early 2027:
- "User-to-user" apps where people create, share and interact with content (e.g. TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, X, Facebook) will be banned for under-16s
- WhatsApp, Signal and YouTube Kids will be exempt
- Under-16s will also be banned from livestreaming, messaging strangers on gaming apps like Discord and using disappearing messages
- 16 and 17 year olds will face nightly social media curfews and limits on infinite scrolling with more details next month
- AI "romantic companion" chatbots will be banned for under-18s
- Adults can still access social media through age checks like facial recognition, digital IDs, passports and credit cards

As an example in Glasgow there is currently a dispersal zone where officers have the power to tell anyone with just one more person to leave the area.
Social media not allowed. Hanging out outside not allowed. Third spaces non-existent.
Awful to be young in this country
The people smugly gloating that young people will just have to 'find something else to do' in response to the social media bans are usually the exact same people who seethe with anger and make reports about 'loitering' whenever they have to share public spaces with teenagers.

I’m unsurprised that the National Deaf Children’s society has come out against the ban. Indeed, I was expecting strong objections from disability organisations.
I have seen firsthand the benefit of social media for deaf youth in terms of engagement with the wider Deaf community internationally and immersion in Deaf culture, in addition to availing of accessible educational resources available on social media apps.
None of this negates the urgent problems that exist on social media, it is to say that a wholesale ban is not the answer.

"Internet bad" is a trendy, upper-middle-class opinion for people with extracurricular budgets that ignores legions of people who rely on it.

There is no sense in which social media and youtube are """adult spaces""" by the way. It's unbelievably arrogant to casually lay exclusive claim on entire platforms of communication and entertainment, but it's also just literally delusional in the case of youtube content.

Don’t actually understand why the under 16 social media ban is angering people either. YouTube I get I guess..
But my kids (8 & 9 yr old) have Xbox’s, iPhones, TVs etc but they all have the parental control, which includes time limits and control of apps etc

Not just for young people. YouTube is an astonishingly rich resource for anyone. Yale University history courses, high-level chess content, classical music with scrolling score... I use YouTube every day and I'm amazed at what's on there.

The proposed youtube ban is effectively prohibiting underage persons from listening to music on their own terms, which I think is very apropos for the dank and miserable aesthetic of the backwater island monarchy. Frankly surprising no one thought of it before.
