Chicago appeared to be a perfect host city for the 2026 World Cup.
But when Rahm Emanuel, the city’s 55th mayor, scrutinized FIFA’s hosting agreement, he turned away. Emanuel believed the proposal left 'Chicago taxpayers as the dumb money at the table'.
It also included the right to request a dome being built over Soldier Field, which proved the final straw.
Eight years on, he hasn't changed his mind.
