XC parents: your role this summer is simple but important. Help make sure your athlete gets to practice, completes their on-your-own runs, and that running remains a priority even during vacations. Let’s be honest: most runs take less than an hour and can usually be done before the rest of the family is even ready for the day. If you’re vacationing somewhere that isn’t safe to run outside… where exactly are you vacationing? 😄 Beyond running, parents can make a huge difference by helping athletes:
• train in relatively new running shoes
• eat mostly home-cooked meals and have a good stock of snacks
• maintain a normal sleep schedule
• actually hear that alarm in the morning Summer isn’t a break from responsibilities. In many ways, teenagers need more structure and support during the summer than they do during the school year. A successful fall season is built during the summer.

Fun to look back at this now. 7 mos later on the podium for Disc (4th) & Shot (5th). His offseason he attended 36 out of 40 workouts. Missed 2 over Thanksgiving break & 1 day he was building a chicken coop & the other day he was picking up pigs. Well done! Show up. Do the work.
Matt Nietz, football/track athlete, hitting 12.5 MPH on gear 2 resistance 8 @SHREDmillSpeed Has hit 13mph before Matt just missed the podium at the state meet last year in shot put. My guess is he will be on that podium this year!

Most American team sports are sprint type sports. Soccer is more mid-distance type. There are exceptions. The US would be much better if more of our talent went to soccer. But it’d probably be talent you wouldn’t expect that transferred over well.
I’m under the belief that if America’s best athletes like Randy Moss, Deion Sanders, LeBron etc played soccer their whole lives the U.S. would win literally every #WorldCup.

The best thing that can happen to a performer is you perform well when feeling like shit. An athlete who runs a PR after feeling like trash. Or a parent who does their best writing with two kids under two. It frees you up from the idea that you need to feel great to perform.

Underrated life advice: Make yourself easy to root for. Be kind. Be reliable. Celebrate other people’s wins. Work hard without complaining. Carry good energy into rooms. You'll be shocked by how many doors open for you by making life better for others.

It's been quite a start to the year for LHP Joseph Dzierwa, Orioles' highest-drafted pitcher of Mike Elias era (2025 second round). The 22-year-old was the star of Spring Breakout (8 K's in 3 scoreless innings). Then, Dzierwa had a 2.21 ERA in 8 starts for High-A Frederick.
LHP Joseph Dzierwa (Orioles' No. 12 prospect per @MLBPipeline) is being promoted to Double-A Chesapeake

Curt Cignetti shares a universal truth about habits and consequences. "In life - you got freedom of choice, but not freedom of consequence." "First you form your habits, then your habits form you." Every choice and action you take compounds. The small decisions you make daily - preparation, work ethic, and how you respond - those become your habits. And over time, those habits become your identity. You're free to choose. But the consequences of those choices aren't optional. Your habits are shaping who you become. (🎥IU Athletics )

Posting workouts without posting paces and your interval between repeats is meaningless and teaches your followers nothing. Example 12 x 400 @ marathon pace with 30 seconds recovery is a strength workout. 12 x 400 at mile pace with 2 minutes recovery is a speed workout.

Most folks underestimate how aerobic most exercise is. Someone running a quick 800m, an even that lasts less than 2-minutes is 55-65% or so aerobic. An 800 is FAST...yet mostly aerobic. Remember that whenever people talk about speed, endurance, HIIT, etc.

Love this topic... I refer to it as "the narrowing" of our lives. It's slow... it's insidious... and it's very real. We rationalize and normalize far too many changes and blame them solely on aging. Yes... aging brings changes-- but it's the lack of doing these movements over decades that's responsible for the majority of the losses.
Mobility doesn’t have to decline with age, but neglect almost guarantees that it will A brand new episode of the FoundMyFitness podcast with Dr. Kelly Starrett (@thereadystate) is out now Rhonda and Kelly discuss: • How to train through nagging pain • Why sitting on the floor protects your hips • How to make desk work less sedentary • What's broken in youth sports • Why stiffness isn't just part of aging • The optimal mobility protocol for a durable body • Why pain is often more signal than injury And so much more Link in the next post
