New pre-print "The influence of earthquake gates on surface rupture length". We map and characterize EQ gates at 1:50k scale from 31 strike-slip surface ruptures, estimate passing probability as a function of geometry, and discuss influence on EQ scaling essopenarchive.org/users/700…

Happy 2024! These days twitter and social media in general feel more like a distraction and less like a learning/constructive space for me so I am going to take a few weeks off (i.e. delete from phone laptop). You can always reach me via email or thru my website 😊

Two recent papers on impermanent barriers to earthquake rupture propagation: an experimental study coming from my lab with @sblcebry here: doi.org/10.1029/2023JB027297 and a modelling study from @diego_mo_om and @DocTerremoto here: rdcu.be/dqHFP

If you want to support deep public engagement by (earthquake) scientists, consider subscribing to our Earthquake Insights blog - link in my bio. (No, we are not paid by anyone else; we left our faculty positions. We write this blog because we think it is important.) 1/
Replying to @Weather_West
"Surely someone else is funding this!" is a common refrain--everyone seems surprised that no one else is supporting deep public engagement by (climate) scientists in this way. But after a pretty exhaustive search, it just seems that's simply not the case in this moment.

Is anyone aware of a compilation of triggering stress/strain values in dynamic and static aftershock triggering studies? *** not in a figure but in a downloadable, workable format. This field seems to have peaked in popularity before data was shared in supplements.

Stepped out of my comfort zone this weekend and went on a field trip to look at big trees instead of rocks for once

Does anyone have a cool simulation of dynamic rupture propagation across a step-over that I can show in my PhD exit talk for illustration purposes? (@seismogenic ?). (Will credit and thank you forever)

Why was the earthquake so large? In our recent paper in @ScienceMagazine, we revealed how the destructive Turkey earthquakes this year gradually ruptured and evolved in a multi-fault web, forming a domino-like cascading effect! Link: doi.org/10.1126/science.adi0…

Our latest @Nature paper shows the power of DAS. Using a 100km cable, we imaged four asperities breaking during a M6 event, whose image would otherwise be a blur. It is like having a new telescope, but for earthquakes! What if we have all the cables?! rdcu.be/dioaw

Go read our new paper in #SRL! We anticipate the uncertainty analysis used in this study (focused on California) will be widely applicable to other regions with a record of historical earthquake intensities such as Japan, Italy, etc.

In a new #SRL paper, scientists led by @madeleine_earth estimate magnitude from shaking intensity for earthquakes with known magnitudes. In this way, the team can assess the uncertainty of intensity-based magnitude. doi.org/10.1785/0220230030

Can't wait to sit down after my thesis is submitted and defended and put together a little piece about some (I think important) null results that came out of my thesis work
#AGU23 attendees! As you submit your abstracts, remember: Results offer valuable lessons, even if they are not what you were hoping to get. Embrace your null-results too! Check out our null-results reports in our type of publications for more information: seismica.library.mcgill.ca/a…
