As a Ukrainian immigrant, it's been horrific to see footage of this war and hear stories from friends and family about their attempts to escape and survive. Some friends and I started a non-profit that directly sends aid to Ukraine.

Teaching directed number soon? "Proof by Patterns" is a nice way to see why a β (βb) = a b.
Start from the top row and encourage pupils to see what patterns they spot.

If you're coming to NCSM this week, I'm presenting Wednesday at 8 am on structures that support deeper student-led mathematical conversations, with shout-outs to @AmyLucenta and @GraceKelemanik (Routines for Reasoning), @cluzniak (Debate Math), and @kassiaowedekind (Hands Down)!
Things got busy out of nowhere so I didn't make a cute graphic, but join me Friday morning as we Demystify Elementary Math for Secondary Teachers!
Friday 9/27 @ 9:30, 503b McCormick Place

Great intro to building pedagogical content knowledge from @jennalaib by having us engage with a problem and examining teacher moves that support students' mathematical thinking in that problem #NCSMchi24
Drilling deeper into the difference between content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge, which differentiates between what teachers know and what those who only study the subject know.
Great session with @AmyLucenta and @GraceKelemanik on redesigning IEP goals to focus on mathematical thinking because "goals drive expectations, interactions, and outcomes." Consider an IEP goal that says, "add decimals with 80% accuracy" vs this updated goal. #NCSMCHI24
Their advice for revising IEP goals is to have them aligned to mathematical thinking, build on strengths, and incorporate instructional strategies, like annotation, ask yourself questions, four Rs, turn and talks, and sentence frames.
This presentation and the work it represents is a direct result of the amazing PD I got at #pcmiTLP with @pegcagle two summers ago. Hope to pay it just a little bit forward tomorrow morning!
Today's activity is a selection of 10 logic puzzles.
This classic form of puzzle has been helping children to become logical thinkers for hundreds of years.
