I should probably introduce myself. And let people know where I stand in regards to the gospel of Jesus Christ. I want there to be no mistake. I am Bryan Summers. I am 49 years old. I'll tell a little of my history and then bare my testimony. Below I'm on my favorite trail in the world. The Timberline Trail on Mt Hood.

Here’s a look inside the missionary assignment room. This is where my fellow apostles and I come frequently to assign the thousands of missionaries that are applying to serve missions all over the world. This process is inspired, revelatory, and I love it with all my heart.

Wait libraries are where the video store experience has been quietly hiding? Maybe I should probably go get a cheap DVD player so that I can watch some of these. I haven't had anything that could play a disc for maybe 10 or 15 years.

Titus 3:9: “Avoid foolish controversies and disputes with those who have no desire for truth, for such arguments bear no fruit.” "Avoid contentions and vain disputes with men of corrupt minds, who do not desire to know the truth" - Joseph Smith “What good does it do to argue profoundly about the Trinity if you lack humility?” - Thomas à Kempis

A brand-new report is out about Latter-day Saints, focusing on Millennials. More on this soon! Here are some charts showing real positive signs and significant challenges ahead—not just for Latter-day Saints but for EVERY faith. - Latter-day Saint Millennials & Gen Z are the most likely of any U.S. religion to say they are "very happy" - Latter-day Saint youth (12-18) attend church, read scriptures and pray far more than their peers of other faiths. - 42% of LDS - as adults - still actively participate in church. That might seem low, but it's the highest of any faith - The last chart is particularly challenging. Retention rates for female Millennials are at 38% compared to their male counterparts at 57%. The young/old female is stunning and something that is impacting ALL religions.

In my second year of brokerage our car was stolen from our apartment as we slept. The car my husband had just prayed over that it would last us till our situation improved. It was a crappy car with 200k in miles and the check engine light on but we needed that car. We had no money , my husband was still in college and I hadn’t made a dime from brokerage. Our area is car dependent so we had a few choices: 1. Car loan from sketchy car lot that would give us a loan considering our lack of income. We couldn’t afford another monthly bill❌ 2. Quit brokerage and get a “real” job (as my circle referred to a W2) But the recession was in full swing and unemployment high ❌ 3. Trust God. I remember my manager at the firm I worked at asking what was next as if I had no choice but to throw in the towel. I told him I didn’t know. By miracle we had full coverage on that piece of crap and when the insurance co. asked me what the value of it was I estimated $2000. I knew we couldn’t buy another car for that. They called us the next day saying they wanted to settle because recovery was not likely and the car was probably in parts and in Mexico by now. They offered us $6500 if I remember correctly and sent us a check. We couldn’t believe it. We were able to buy a cheap Toyota Corolla off Craigslist in all cash. No car payment. Our expenses were low enough to stay in brokerage and that “new” car lasted us till after our first home and baby until the engine blew out. Sometimes our prayers are answered in weird ways. We prayed that car would last and it didn’t but God provided another that did and far beyond what we expected.

Remember, “don’t feed the trolls” isn’t just about giving them satisfaction by responding towards their comments. Some folks make money off trolling, so responding to them is literally feeding them via their financial incentives for engagement.

Catholicism doesn’t require me to pretend Mormonism is true. It does require me to treat Mormons as human beings made in the image of God. I can reject LDS theology while still refusing to mock the people who believe it. In my experience, charity opens far more doors than ridicule ever has. If our goal is evangelization, calling someone’s faith “a Marvel comic religion” is usually more effective at winning an argument than winning a soul. I got over 200 people in a space tonight and I prayed the Rosary and shared the Catholic scripture readings for today. I also explained Marian devotion and the Catechism. And I had a couple LDS tell me that they were planning on attending a Catholic Mass because of our time together. That’s why.

Saying “this debate has really made me appreciate how my religion used to just kill people instead of debate them” is lowkey the funniest possible reaction to a debate

Feeling a bit down tonight. I’ve caught a lot of flak for defending the dignity and humanity of members of other faiths. I expected some of that. I can handle the troll accounts spewing bile; that is just the nature of this hellsite. What has surprised me, though, is that a few large and influential accounts on my own “team” — people I have respected — have left me feeling ashamed and embarrassed in a way I have not felt in quite some time. I have only been a revert to the faith for a few years, so maybe I am naive. Maybe I should keep my mouth shut. But tonight I spent an hour and a half talking with LDS members about Jesus. They even sat through the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary with me. I thought that was a win. I am not pretending our theological differences are small. They are not. I am not saying truth does not matter. It does. But surely the first step in evangelization is to see the person in front of you as someone loved by God, not as an enemy to be humiliated. Is that not what we are meant to do? To my Catholic family: am I in the wrong here? Anyhow, I look forward to daily Mass in the morning. I know Christ in the Blessed Sacrament will mend this weary heart. And yes, I know I will probably be mocked for this post too, or accused of engagement farming. Whatever. God bless you all. Good night.

This is hilarious
My only real contribution to the Mormon discourse is this story years ago I worked with a Mormon guy who came back from a few days off because his wife had a child I asked what they named the lad him: "Hinckley" me: "like the guy who shot Reagan?" Him: "wait, what" and that's how we each learned the name of a famous Hinckley that day

I spent a chunk of my early years around Mormons and they were in general exemplary people. Solid families, friendly and open. If I had one complaint it would be aggressive proselytizing - which even happened on the school bus. But that is also a healthy sign of confidence in their way of life. Exact discussions of their theology strike me as beside the point when they frequently live more ‘Christian lives’ than men serving as Jesuit priests or leaders of prosperity gospel megachurches - which are basically a Sunday infomercial.

Read the Book of Mormon. Cover to cover. Pray about it, asking sincerely to know whether it’s true (the final chapter provides specific guidance on this point). Then tell me whether Latter-day Saints believe in Jesus Christ. Will you accept that challenge?

There’s a huge difference between righteous rebuke offered out of love for your brother and merciless derision offered out of love for your own ego. I’m seeing far too much of the latter in this whole “LDS aren’t Christian” discussion. Some of y’all think you’re Jesus with a whip of cords. You’re not. If your correction is driven by contempt rather than charity, then you are not defending Christ — you’re offering someone else’s dignity on the altar of your own ego.

This is a stupid list, Senator Lee is right, and not even for the reason he mentions. It’s ALL a doctrinal confusion. Not just with Mormons. The big things: “Orthodox” is not one flavor of Christianity. There are Eastern Orthodox (which I am – Antiochian, Russian, Romanian, Greek, etc) and Oriental Orthodox (like Copts and Ethiopians). These are massive churches with hundreds of millions of adherents and have been distinct for 1600 years, but all have bishops’ lineages going directly back to the apostles. There’s also the Church of the East – Assyrians. They, too, have been around for 2000 years. Many of you searching for what unites Christians seem to fail to understand that the Church (east and west both) was largely unified in doctrine and dogma for 1000 years. For those of you stating the Trinity is a critical doctrine, I agree – so why are Jehovah’s Witnesses on there? They reject the Trinity, as do many Pentecostal churches. “Nicene Christianity” is an important distinction that flies over the heads of many, but the Nicene Creed IS the unifying document, which is why the whole of Christendom came together to form it in 381 AD. But that, too, is a tough category to nail down – because there are thousands and thousands of “bible churches” teaching all kinds of unusual doctrines. The best thing to do would be to have people self-identify their faith – maybe that’s the only way. This way Jews could say “reformed” or “conservative” or “orthodox”, Muslims could say what branch they are, and on and on. Catholics might be Latin rite or Eastern. And Mormons who self-identify as Christians could say that, sure, because while Mormon belief is very different and something I very much disagree with, as I’ve pointed out, other churches here listed as Christian also reject Nicene Christianity. Only the Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, and Assyrian churches can claim the laying on of hands with their bishops and direct lineage going back to the first century apostolic age. Virtually every other church has come about in the last ~500 years – except the Waldensians, which popped up in the 13th century. As an aside – and I say this with zero satire or spiritual irony – most of the Mormons I have known have been more sincere and serious in their beliefs, and in treating their fellow man with the golden rule, than many of the Trinitarian Christians I have known. That should be an indictment on all who would throw stones at Mormons search their own hearts, because we all fall short of the Glory of God. Their kindness and sincerity doesn’t change their belief system being way out of sync with Nicene Christianity, but I respect the way they apply their faith to human interaction greatly and have had many good Mormon friends. I have also toured the Mormon church headquarters in downtown Salt Lake City, and WOW. They have really done some incredible stuff there. You won’t ever hear about some massive social problem in Utah – the LDS church handles a lot. Mormons are very good at organizing and building things socially. Mormons also agree with me on one very important and crucial principle: that this land is blessed by God with special favor. It’s part of their beliefs, actually, that I really think is cool. To my knowledge, they are the only faith with this specific belief system exalting the greatness of America. And – let’s be honest – Mormons have faced INSANE persecution throughout their history, but they have never “gone woke” and have always loved America. Mormons have endured much and yet take our Constitution more seriously than virtually anyone else, which is why so many great Mormons are true Constitutional scholars, like Senator Mike Lee. This is why religion is largely a personal matter for self-identification. God asks us to identify ourselves as His followers and the Census or whatever should do so also. Just leave a damn blank there to fill in.

You need to be able to understand something well enough to be able to persuasively defend it before you can credibly argue against it.
