'We saw Ebola patients trying to push though to come into our country'
Uganda Permanent Secretary for Health Dr Diana Atwine tells Focus On Africa's Waihiga Mwaura that her country closed the borders with the DRC to try and contain the current Ebola outbreak.
Permanent Secretary, Dr. Diana Atwine updates the media on the current Ebola status in the country.
*Uganda has not recorded any new confirmed case of EVD since Monday 25th May 2026.* However, the total number of contacts to the confirmed cases have increased. Most of these contacts are health workers.
*The total number of cases stand at seven (7) with one death.*
Following the escalating Ebola outbreak in the DRC and increased cross-border movement risks, the National Task Force on Ebola Response has announced the following immediate measures:
• Uganda has temporarily closed its border with the DRC. Only authorized Ebola response teams, humanitarian operations, food/cargo transport, and essential security personnel will be allowed entry under strict health screening protocols.
• All authorized travelers from the DRC will undergo mandatory health screening, documentation, locator form completion, and continuous monitoring at entry points.
• Anyone returning from the DRC into Uganda must undergo 21 days of mandatory self-isolation under Ministry of Health supervision.
• Schools in border districts will remain open but must strictly follow MOH Ebola SOPs. Learners returning from the DRC must have daily temperature monitoring for 21 days.
• RDCs/RCCs are directed to enforce all Ebola prevention and control guidelines.
• Media houses are required to dedicate daily prime-time programming to Ebola awareness, prevention, and reporting.
Let us remain vigilant and continue observing all Ministry of Health guidance.

Every 3rd of May, Uganda joins the rest of the world in commemorating Candlelight Memorial Day but yesterday Uganda celebrated the #CandlelightMemorialDay at Kitante Hill School, Kololo, under the theme: “Ending AIDS by 2030: Embracing the Role of Women,” and I was honored to be part of it.
At the International Candlelight Memorial, we stand in solidarity with people living with HIV. Through our $2.3 billion health partnership & American innovation like lenacapavir—a twice-yearly injection preventing nearly 100% of new HIV infections—we're moving closer to ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. Together, we will end HIV. 🇺🇸🇺🇬🕯️

Remarks from Hon. Milly Babalanda;
Today, Uganda has made tremendous gains. New HIV infections have significantly declined over the years, AIDS-related deaths have greatly reduced, over 1.4 million Ugandans are accessing life-saving antiretroviral treatment & mother-to-child transmission has drastically reduced.
These achievements are not accidental. They are the result of deliberate government commitment, resilient communities, committed health workers, civil society organizations, development partners, religious and cultural institutions and the courage of people living with HIV.
