World Cup hydration breaks would be legendary if some player’s mom just sprinted onto the pitch with a bag of orange wedges like it was 1998 rec league soccer. ‘Here, eat these, you look dehydrated!

The little birds I’ve been feeding for the past few months get very upset whenever I’m on the patio and they want to come eat. My dreams of being a Disney Princess seem as distant as ever…

Kevin Pollak sharing stories about working with Jack Nicholson on A FEW GOOD MEN (1992) is as entertaining as you’d expect.

Replying to @bscholl
@bscholl your (almost) disclosure about the true composition of the turbine material to security reminds me of one of my favourite books: Stuff by Ivan Amato. I’m an EE and thought I had zero interest in materials science but I couldn’t put this book down.

Part 3 of the book is about the explicit design of new materials based on desired properties rather than the search for existing ones, including superalloys for jet and rocket engines. The book is almost 30 years old but I’m curious how much alloy R&D has changed in that time?

The understanding of how each alloying component affects the whole, as well as the speed and accuracy of simulation has increased, and new testing and visualization of prototypes, sure, but were there any huge leaps, or was it all incremental, better understanding?

40% off for a year of blue check would have been tempting if they didn't nerf the ad free. I'm not paying $50 for a year of "less ads". If I'm paying for a service it's going to be 100% ad-free. Ask me if I pay for cable TV or any streaming service with ads. You know the answer.

This animation shows the electric field distribution inside the shielding can of the framework SDR module, with one of the traces acting as the excitation source. I need to run the same simulation for the filter path, but it looks like I'll need absorbers in the cavity

Finally at the point where I feel good enough to release my LORA Project: -Decodes Meshtastic, Meshcore, LoraWAN, and other protocols. -Detects on non-standard frequencies across the entire bandwidth. -Supports Soapy, BladeRF, and USRP -Add custom keys github.com/persistentcache/L…

ugh I don't need another distraction @RueNahcMohr ... started thinking about an 8051 board with external flash SRAM, then thought why not use microsd micro for flash emulation, then why not just use the micro and forget the 8051, now coming full-circle.

I think I'm just going to leave this in your capable hands. I've got more than enough on my plate and do *NOT* need another project. I still haven't done anything with that microcassette recorder that I got with the intention to do some microcontroller DSP stuff with last year.

It surprised me to learn it takes me about 12-14 hours to assemble, clean and smoke test one of these. I always hand assemble the first prototypes because it’s faster than involving a CM/assembly house and I can adapt/bodge right away.

Two days, around 6-7h each. It is very therapeutic. Good tunes, a lot of talking to myself, the board, the components I’m placing and jotting down notes about what I’m adjusting:

What do you mean, SC88 and SOT23 aren’t the same footprint? 😇 #prototypesareformakingmistakes

/r/theydidthemath People assume that since it’s fibre you can just create longer links without considering the link budget implications. Optical fibre purity is amazing but it’s not perfect, and 800km is a lot of accumulated imperfection.
assume 0.2 dB/km, that is 160 dB. If you launch 20 dBm ish into it, you get about 80 photons/s out. 800 km of dispersion limits your bw/time bin to ~ 1 GHz, and you can get ~ 1 kbps with ideal detection

Pop quiz, pros… which pin is source, and which is drain? And guess who screwed it up on his prototype? 👍 THIS GUY 👍 An easy fix, but still… 🤦‍♂️

That wasn’t so bad. A little isopropyl alcohol and a scrub and nobody’s the wiser. Oh, and updating the schematic symbol <—> footprint pin map so I don’t screw this up again.

And to save anyone else the trouble… I went through all the 200-some-odd in-stock SOT23-3 P-channel MOSFETs with reasonable 3.3V characteristics on @digikey… none have source on pin 2. Not a single one. Zip. Zilch. Zero. Nada.
