This is actually quite beautiful.
a few years ago my friend and I were both single, and we had a conversation about “elevating dating to an art form” it started out mostly joking but eventually a clear picture emerged: we would strive to make the experience as beautiful as possible for the other person that meant clear communication, exceptional effort & presence, and, if things weren’t a match, letting them down in a gentle, honest way it was successful (both of us are now in relationships) but also it made dating fun again. it made it a creative pursuit - how do I create something beautiful here - and dispelled any fatigue or disillusionment

Mood: unironically reading textbooks on writing style just to get a mental break from the nonstop AI generated writing that has taken over the Internet. The examples are so beautiful.

An OpenAI model has achieved a major breakthrough in mathematics, by disproving a central conjecture in discrete geometry that was first posed by Paul Erdős in 1946. This is the first time AI has autonomously solved a prominent open problem central to a field of mathematics.

Today, we share a breakthrough on the planar unit distance problem, a famous open question first posed by Paul Erdős in 1946. For nearly 80 years, mathematicians believed the best possible solutions looked roughly like square grids. An OpenAI model has now disproved that belief, discovering an entirely new family of constructions that performs better. This marks the first time AI has autonomously solved a prominent open problem central to a field of mathematics.

There is a point at which excessive introspection becomes procrastination. Most problems cannot be solved by looking inward, as if to unlock something you already have.
When the answer is practice, stop shopping for philosophy.

I completely agree. This is also why I've decided to stop optimizing for lower taxes and instead live where I want to live, while owning as few houses/other stuff as possible.
Financial freedom isn't about money, it's about attention. The more you think about money, the less free you actually are.

A very interesting observation by Elon below. And it’s just one example. Startups have brought more progress to the world this century than any NGO or government program. By far. When you hear NGO, think NoGO. They provide some incremental, mostly palliative care, but they don’t lead structural change for the better, and sometimes, achieve quite the opposite. How can we do better? One idea: we should allow donations to corporations to be as tax-deductible as to NGOs. Unleash catalytic philanthropy. I first had this thought when Larry Page reflected that were he to be hit by a bus, he should leave his entire estate to Elon Musk, instead of any non-profit he could think of, because he believes in the missions of SpaceX and Tesla and knows they are more likely to achieve their mission than any non-profit. And they become self-sustaining from internal cash flows; early donations are catalytic, and more rewarding to the donor than the unsustainable cost center inefficiency and waste of most NGOs. — video clip of my discussion with Elon about this: youtube.com/shorts/fJA9cw5Cy…
Starlink has done more than any NGO to lift people out of poverty by connecting them with a means of education and a market for their good & services via the Internet

AI might be a powerful depolarizer in political discourse
While social media is polarising, evidence suggests AI may nudge people towards the centre. This holds true of all studied models. Grok is more right-leaning than other models, but also has depolarising effects. By @jburnmurdoch.

4/ We will also keep fighting the dangerous interpretation of 18 U.S.C. §1960 that treats software development as “money transmission.” That’s why we support Storm’s appeal, the BRCA’s passage to clarify the law, and Michael Lewellen’s civil case seeking a declaratory judgment.

We should retire the term "AI alignment." The existing vocabulary from software quality, consumer protection, and product liability works fine: does it do what it claims to do, does it mislead users, does it cause harm, who is liable when it fails?

Negligence and duty of care aren't different because the software is an LLM. There is nothing Claude can do that someone good with Google couldn't have done 10 years ago. Claude just does it faster.
