On this Sunday, I reflect on what has kept me grounded all these years in following Jesus, and it was the story of Daniel that continually strengthened my faith and conviction. In Daniel 1:8, it says: “But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself…” Before the pressure came, Daniel had already made up his mind to honor God. That verse deeply impacted me as a young believer. Like Daniel, I purposed in my heart early in my youth to live for the Lord, and that decision has guided my marriage, family, raising children, and public service. I gave my life to Jesus at the end of 8th grade during a Harvest Crusade, and that commitment became my north star through every season of life. They are laying the groundwork for this tax through Assembly Bill 1421, and if we do not push back aggressively now, they will quietly move forward and find a way to reach even deeper into your pocketbooks. This mileage tax punishes those who must commute to work, take their kids to school, attend medical appointments, or simply live their daily lives. It disproportionately harms working-class families and residents in suburban communities like Westminster, where driving is not a luxury—it is a necessity. Tonight, I respectfully urge the Mayor and this Council to allow me to agendize this item. I am asking for a second to this motion so that we can formally oppose AB 1421, a bill that lays the foundation for imposing a mileage tax on every driver in California.
