Sacramento politicians are pushing an outrageous new mileage tax that would charge hardworking Californians 6 to 9 cents for every mile you drive. That amounts to an additional $900 to $1,200 per year per driverâmoney taken directly out of the pockets of working families, seniors, and small businesses who are already struggling with the high cost of living in California.
They are laying the groundwork for this tax through Assembly Bill 1421, and if we do not push back aggressively now, they will quietly move forward and find a way to reach even deeper into your pocketbooks. This mileage tax punishes those who must commute to work, take their kids to school, attend medical appointments, or simply live their daily lives. It disproportionately harms working-class families and residents in suburban communities like Westminster, where driving is not a luxuryâit is a necessity.
Tonight, I respectfully urge the Mayor and this Council to allow me to agendize this item. I am asking for a second to this motion so that we can formally oppose AB 1421, a bill that lays the foundation for imposing a mileage tax on every driver in California. Westminster must stand up and clearly say no to policies that unfairly burden our residents.
**UPDATE: Tonight, the Mayor and Council rejected my resolution opposing AB 1421. In doing so, they forgot their duty to defend local control and stand up for the people they were elected to serve.
When elected officials fail to lead, the people must speak out. Tonightâs vote exposed a lack of courage and convictionâleaders frozen like deer in the headlights while Sacramento pushes yet another tyrannical policy onto our local residents.
Westminster deserves leaders who will fight for taxpayers, protect local control, and stand firm against overreach from Sacramento. True leadership is desperately needed.
