As you can imagine, the challenges here are very real.
@retool is browser-based IDE and runtime and of course there's no appetite for latency in any developer's toolchain. Decades of a local-first development model have set the baseline expectation and Retool has to work hard to meet and exceed that expectation.
We can't limit ourselves to the obvious stuff — this kind of work requires nailing the fundamentals but then looking for the non-obvious, ambitious work at the bleeding edge of what's possible. A lot of "sure we've done it this way forever but time to rethink this from the ground up" style thinking.
There's a set of hidden challenges here as well:
@retool is a horizontal platform. The capabilites are awesome — you can rapidly build just about anything. Which means our builders will indeed build just about anything. It's up to us help guide our builders into pit of success — whatever you build on
@retool should feel fast, lightweight, responsive, etc. That's no easy feat but with the right kind of investment, it's an opportunity we can deliver on.
Finally, as a managed platform, we have a chance to make things faster and faster over time without our customers having to lift a finger. That's a pretty neat spot to be in: "Good morning, your app is now 2x faster, enjoy." 💖
