Ils condensent un paradoxe que l’Occident préfère ne pas regarder en face : la liberté est aujourd’hui défendue avec le plus d’âpreté par celles qui en sont précisément privées. Pendant que les chancelleries occidentales négocient, temporisent et « dialoguent » avec les régimes qui écrasent ces peuples, les femmes d’Iran et d’Afghanistan tiennent une ligne de front qui est aussi la nôtre. They say they support education for everyone, for both women and men, then they separate boys and girls in school, and for the girls’ final high school exam they introduce a math test you would expect in top Chinese universities. Of course, the exam for the boys is much, much easier. If there were a free press in Syria, which there isn’t, they would ask the Ministry of Education, a long-time Al-Qaeda cleric, to try to solve even one of the math problems given to these young women, who spent five years studying like mules, clinging to the smallest sliver of hope for a chance to escape a life of poverty and misery after years of civil war. Those who can afford it will have to repeat the year, and keep trying until learned helplessness forces them back into the kitchen. That’s the plan. That’s how the system will work from now on in Syria. On the surface, they will keep parroting European Union-style language about opportunity, inclusion, and progress. But in reality, they are implementing a deeply reactionary worldview rooted in Al-Qaeda ideology, just repackaged in the hypocritical language of neoliberalism. Die Eltern vermuten, dass die muslimische Familie, die den Nähkurs betreibt, hinter der Entführung steht. Als der christliche Vater allerdings Anzeige stellt, folgen Einschüchterungen und Drohungen. Die mittellose Familie, die im mehrheitlich muslimischen Pakistan sowieso am Rand der Gesellschaft lebt, hat kaum Möglichkeiten, sich durchzusetzen. Christian Solidarity International (CSI) finanziert einen Anwalt. Der weist das Gericht an, nach Neha zu suchen. Die Eltern sollen Recht behalten: Ihre Tochter wurde entführt und zum Islam zwangskonvertiert. Man findet sie in einer Islamischen Schule wieder. Zum Gerichtsprozess erscheint Neha nun komplett schwarz verhüllt. Sie darf nicht mit den Eltern reden. Und das Gericht verhindert überdies die Rückführung. Der Fall Neha spiegelt die Gesamtsituation in Pakistan wieder. Mädchen und junge Frauen aus armen Familien, die Minderheiten angehören, werden entführt, zwangskonvertiert und häufig gegen ihren Willen verheiratet. Das Schiff legte am 12. Juni 1941 im Hafen von Lissabon (Portugal) in Richtung USA ab; es war das letzte Schiff, das Europa verließ. Da es für meine Urgroßeltern jedoch schwierig war, rechtzeitig nach Portugal zu gelangen, entschied ihr Schwiegersohn, Mordechai (Markus) Bistritzky, die Karten an den Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, und die Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka Schneerson zu übergeben. Dank dieser Geste wurden der Rebbe und die Rebbetzin gerettet und erreichten am 28. Siwan 5701 (1941) die Vereinigten Staaten. Levi und Ruchama wurden in das Lager Drancy in Frankreich verschleppt und von dort nach Auschwitz deportiert, wo sie ermordet wurden. Vor ihrem Haus in der Innocentiastraße 64 in Hamburg erinnern heute Stolpersteine an ihr Schicksal.

To use a leftie term, I’m feeling especially triggered by the response to what happened to Kallie Keeler. All the anon accounts screeching that it's a normal part of wrestling, just an "oil check" (an illegal move by the way, that this was not), that she's too wimpy and weak to be a wrestler if she can't handle it. Bullshit. She was assaulted. A man stuck his fingers inside her vagina and held them there. This incident echoes dark patterns that I have witnessed and even been caught in the midst of for decades. Bad men will hide behind shields of respectability while abusing girls and women in plain sight. As a former gymnast and whistleblower, I see the parallels to Larry Nassar immediately. Nassar hid behind the respectability of his medical degree and his role as USA Gymnastics team doctor. After he abused young female athletes for 30 years, finally women came forward in droves to report the assaults. Those victims were attacked for months until there were too many to ignore. My coach hid behind his "coach" title, while claiming to keep athletes safe as a spotter, then molesting in plain view. Athletes were shamed into silence. Predators will exploit any opening to find, abuse and assault their victims.

Der westafrikanische Staat Niger mit seinen 25 Mio Einwohnern macht sich gerade international zum Gespött. Wie frankophone Medien übereinstimmend berichten, stellte er gerade asexuellen und intersexuellen Sex unter Strafe (bis zu 10 Jahre): das wird so explizit im Text des Gesetzes aufgeführt. Das Gesetz richtet natürlich primär gegen homosexuelle Männer und Frauen. So lächerlich das klingen mag, einen so ernsten Hintergrund hat das: Niger ist damit das vierte Land in der Region (nach Burkina Faso, Ghana, Senegal), das solche Gesetze in letzter Zeit verschärft hat. Homosexualität war in Niger zuvor nicht strafbar (nur Tabu in dem überwiegend muslimischen Land). Weiterhin können nur das Eingehen oder Arrangieren gleichgeschlechtlicher Ehen mit bis zu 20 Jahren Haft bestraft werden, ebenso die Selbstorganisation in Vereinen. “Geschlechtswechsel” können mit bis zu 10 Jahren bestraft werden. Hintergrund: die nigrischen Gesetzgeber verboten verbatim “GBTQIA -Praktiken” und führen dabei auch noch die Bedeutung des Buchstabensalats auf, eben halt auch “asexuell”. Ein großes Dankeschön an “unsere Aktivisten”!
