Just look at how sick the Salafi mindset is. These cutthroats in suits, presenting themselves to the Western establishment as âmoderates,â have found a way to cap womenâs education while pretending the opposite. They say they support education for everyone, for both women and men, then they separate boys and girls in school, and for the girlsâ final high school exam they introduce a math test you would expect in top Chinese universities. Of course, the exam for the boys is much, much easier. If there were a free press in Syria, which there isnât, they would ask the Ministry of Education, a long-time Al-Qaeda cleric, to try to solve even one of the math problems given to these young women, who spent five years studying like mules, clinging to the smallest sliver of hope for a chance to escape a life of poverty and misery after years of civil war. Those who can afford it will have to repeat the year, and keep trying until learned helplessness forces them back into the kitchen. Thatâs the plan. Thatâs how the system will work from now on in Syria. On the surface, they will keep parroting European Union-style language about opportunity, inclusion, and progress. But in reality, they are implementing a deeply reactionary worldview rooted in Al-Qaeda ideology, just repackaged in the hypocritical language of neoliberalism. Welcome to Al-Qaeda Inc. 2.0: wearing a suit, beard neatly trimmed, but in substance, the same old misogynist bastards.
