The strangulation of #AppleDaily ought to be a wake-up call for the free world - the latest in a succession of wake-up calls.
I won't stop speaking out, calling out the appeasers, until the democratic world takes action.
Here's what I said on 12 June: youtube.com/watch?v=xAEZG5cB…
🧵What an incredible privilege it was to meet Mr Zhang Yabo, a former Chinese policeman from Xinjiang who has courageously testified to the appalling mass atrocity crimes perpetrated by the Chinese Communist Party regime against the Uyghurs.
He is a brave man whose testimony deserves to be heard widely
🧵Just got home from three days in Berlin, speaking at and attending the @IUFforum
It was an important conference of people gathered together to remind the world about the #UyghurGenocide and to strategise on actions to stop the atrocities which not only the Uyghurs but also #Tibetans, people across #China, and #HongKong suffer and to build unity and solidarity among these communities as well as #Taiwan.
It was a great privilege to moderate a fireside chat with the Ambassador of Taiwan to the EU, and to speak on a panel on transnational repression and sustainable advocacy, as well as to meet Parliamentarians such as @Alduceppe and @HayatoOkamura /
And of course it was wonderful to meet again with courageous Uyghur friends like @RushanAbbas, and for the first time with the courageous former Chinese policeman turned whistleblower Mr Zhang Yabo.
Thank you @IUFforum for inviting me and for your hard work organising this important gathering.
I wish @angelaeagle the very best in this new role, in our national interest.
She has a big job to do, as we face many very serious threats every day. I hope she will listen to both her predecessors @DanJarvisMBE and @TomTugendhat and ensure that she does everything within her power to defend our national security.
I'm so proud of our remarkable Armed Forces.
That is precisely why we need to fund them properly, in this dangerous world.
We look to them to put themselves in harm's way to defend us and our values and our country. The least we can do is make sure they are properly funded and have the kit, equipment and resources they need.
I hope @Keir_Starmer and @RachelReevesMP will learn the lessons of @JohnHealey_MP and @AlistairCarns' resignations, listen to politicians like @TomTugendhat, and empower @DanJarvisMBE as the new Defence Secretary to make sure our troops are equipped, resourced, and supported.
Earlier this week - in fact, very shortly after he had opened a debate on #Myanmar in Parliament - I bought @Jeremy_Hunt's new book, and last night in Berlin I started reading it and continued on my flight home today.
I am about halfway through, and highly recommend it. I am no economist, but he writes about fundamental economic policies and the importance of growth in a highly readable and very easy to understand way, and it makes so much sense.
Cut taxes. Reduce debt. Get more people into work. Build. Innovate. Make the public sector productive. Understand the importance of energy. Invest in education and the regions. Take risks.
Makes sense!
I'll comment again once I have finished it, but so far I am enjoying it very much and recommend it.
Thank you @RushanAbbas for this lovely inscription
It is my honour to support your courageous and vital campaign and to fight alongside you for justice and freedom for the Uyghurs
#FreeGulshanAbbas
Stop #UyghurGenocide
@RushanAbbas’ book has some remarkable endorsements
It’s a very important book which I will read very soon and with great interest. I urge you to read it too!
