How can we measure the quality of a democratic voting method for electing a legislature? Until now, there have been no well-defined metrics that work for diverse voting methods and party systems. I've been pondering this, literally for years. I can finally answer. Read on: /1

Update: now I get more ads than ever. Which I choose to believe means that a billionaire @elonmusk spent attention to have somebody specifically mess with me 😂. Though honestly it probably just means that this platform is falling apart and the services just sometimes break.

Dude really ran this platform into the ground. It explains why he's testing out ads from F-tier content farms. x.com/MattBinder/status/1710…

Hahaha, @elonmusk, you loser. Today I've scrolled through many hundred posts. Exactly 1 ad, total. Apparently I've blocked them all. Until today, that was impossible. There were always more to block. But seems now everyone but the bottom-feeders I've already blocked is gone.

(To be clear, I'm not getting those userless content-farm ads either; apparently that rollout hasn't hit me yet.)

By the way, the "1 ad, total" was in Russian, a language I don't speak. Sad @elonmusk's only friends left, I guess. Poor little rich boy😿😿😿.

Some really neat work on neurosymbolic Bayesian inference from @GothoskarNishad!
3D understanding is key in vision & robotics. Moving beyond common discriminative models, we introduce 3DNEL, a generative probabilistic inverse graphics take on 6D pose estimation. Result? SOTA & added probabilistic benefits. Explore at probcomp.github.io/nel & #ICCV2023 🧵

The new strangest results of my career (with Kevin Shu and Alex Wang). Gradient descent can accelerate (in big-O!) by just periodically taking longer steps. No momentum needed to beat O(1/T) in smooth convex opt! Paper: arxiv.org/abs/2309.09961 [1/3]

Really cool application of the multi-dimensional dynamic Bayesian factor analysis model that @DevinCaughey, Tomoya Sasaki, and I have been working on to model democracy around the world. Very rough, beta version of the R package here: github.com/devincaughey/dbmm
Here’s my swan song for The Economist on the state of “democracy” globally. We apply a Bayesian factor analysis model from @cwarshaw & @DevinCaughey to data from V-Dem, @annemeng_, @anthlittle others and find 2 distinct components of decline v stability economist.com/interactive/gr…
