Parenting is not what you expect it to be. "Daddy why is the sky blue?" I could handle. Forward Rayleigh scattering is stronger for blue light. I can even explain it to my 5yo, quite well. "Daddy who wrote the bible? They probably made a lot of money." is a different level.

About a year ago I heard that EBI had to ask TikTok (yes really) to stop scraping the EMDB so aggressively. As it turns out, ByteDance was training an EM reconstruction model. Funny how the world works sometimes.

1/ 🔍 Wonder about the answer? cryo-EM ✖️ Foundation Model 🟰 ❓ cryo-EM ✖️ Flow Matching 🟰 ❓ cryo-EM ✖️ Diffusion Transformer 🟰 ❓ Excited to introduce our new work--cryoFM, the first cryo-EM foundation model for protein densities with flow matching, which generalizes to four tasks without finetuning. 📃 Paper: arxiv.org/abs/2410.08631 🏠️ Project: bytedance.github.io/cryostar… Joint work with Yilai Li @li_yilai , Jing Yuan @eugenejyuan , Quanquan Gu @QuanquanGu

Dear cryo-EM women scientists, We want to honor you and your contributions at BPS 2025. This year, the Cryo-EM subgroup will honor a mid/senior-career woman scientist as the inaugural June Almeida awardee. June Almeida is the virologist who first discovered the coronavirus in 1967 using negative stain electron microscopy. Her story, like many women we know, is remarkable. womenshistory.org/education-… It is in the spirit of June Almeida’s innovative research that this award is named. The awardee, in addition to receiving an honorarium, will present their research at the BPS CryoEM Subgroup Symposium. The deadline for nominations for the Almeida Award is November 1st, and details of the award and the application process can be found at (biophysics.org/Awards-Fundin…). Nomination packets should be sent to bps.cryo.em.subgroup@gmail.com. Questions? Contact @OliBClarke, me, @MeghnaG27 @PilarCossio2 or @10feng ♥️We sincerely hope to see you at BPS 2025 in LA to celebrate achievements and advances in cryo-EM!

Trust me, personal motivations letters should not be written by an AI. chatGPT sounds like a thesaurus and I find it very hard to make it convey a personal tone and interest. It would have to know YOU to do it right, and only you know yourself. 1/4

It's not always easy to know why you want to do something or express it coherently or even honestly. I too have balanced my true motivation with what sounds better, I think most of us have. But this is a USEFUL exercise; take stock and think about what you are doing and why. 3/4

Shoving that task over on AI is bad for all the same reasons. A personal motivation letter is not meant to be honed to perfection, nor am I expecting the people behind them to be. People are real, and their efforts matter. End of rant. 4/4
