my take on "can you be a fan of a game if you haven't played it" is yes in the sense you can i.e. be a fan of a sport without practicing it. But I think we all agree that watching a game on tv and being the one who is kicking the ball are fundamentally different experiences/

I am aware it's not a perfect 1:1 analogy because the athlete is also the creator of the performance the fan is watching, while a gamer is also a consumer of a partly pre-designed experience. But there's still that degree of separation from a completely passive consumption
