This is an interesting read about deep learning (I've been using it to map wheat yield using remote sensing). You've got to love an article that leads with a reference to Edwin Abbot's "Flatland" pnas.org/content/117/48/3003…

A recent review of one of my postdoctoral researchers' articles stated: 'The article should be written impersonally, avoiding the word "we"'. My opinion is that this recommendation is antiquated and unnecessary. What do you guys think?

Use of first person pronouns is often required to use active voice. Passive voice is not only old-fashioned, it's weak.

It took me a long while to work out that when I’m feeling dissatisfied, it’ usually because one of thes criteria is not being met.
About a year ago, I wrote myself a ā€˜research philosophy’ and stuck it to my wall. When research opportunities have come up, I’ve used it to decide whether to go for them or not. I can’t tell you how useful and liberating it’s been @AcademicChatter @OpenAcademics
