The 72nd Bishop of Exeter was formally ‘elected’ this morning, at Exeter Cathedral in a private ceremony, as part of a tradition dating back to the 13th century.
This follows the King’s approval of his nomination, announced earlier this month, and precedes the Bishop’s enthronement which is due to take place at the Cathedral later this year.
This process, led by The Very Revd Jonathan Greener, has remained largely unchanged since it was established by King John in 1214.

A massive 🙌 to all of our brilliant @RoyalDevonNHS volunteers - you make such a difference to our patients - ❤️talking to Jack,June, Linda, Anthony , Jane and many more. And June - I am already working on the 5 actions you gave me🤣
Student Finance England apparently cannot cope with twins (or other multiples presumably) applying for student finance in the same academic year. I wish I was making this up. I assure you I am not #twins
Excellent time in Sheffield seeing the first cohort of students of the NHS funded CPE unit receive their certificates: exciting for professional development of #healthcarechaplaincy !

We are so very aware of the funding crisis in the hospice movement- but cutting spiritual care is like taking the soul out of holistic care. Where now do we recommend patients go to get spiritual care (especially if they are not religious?) #justnotholistic
Received confirmation today that the post I job-share as Spiritual Care Coordinator (Chaplain) for Birmingham Hospice is being made redundant. This is in spite of many members of the community writing in to petition that this core service should be maintained.

Copied to @bbcsml as little or no media interest in this - or indeed similar decision by @Sue_Ryder to remove spiritual care provision from ALL 7 hospices. Happy to explain the inequalities this brings about. Hospice care without spiritual care- what does this even mean?
Will @hospiceuk say something about the number of hospices this week deciding that specialist spiritual care is no longer part of what they provide. We would value clear commitment on this vital issue. What do hospices stand for if no specialist spiritual care offered? @bbcsml
I am so sorry to hear this. I am very aware of the acute funding crisis in the hospice movement, but hospice care without spiritual care is a poor echo was good EOL care looks like. @hospiceuk

Still time to book for my intro to Franciscan spirituality as part of our webinar series on Traditions of Christian Spirituality hosted jointly by @SarumCollege and the @ChurchTimes from 7:30-9 PM (UK time) on Monday 18th March. Booking and more info: sarum.ac.uk/short-courses/fr…
feeling very much for the @Sue_Ryder spiritual care providers as they are made redundant. Seems like org has lost its soul. 112£ million income but not a penny on spiritual care direct to #EOL patients and families. not sure what else to say @BBCNews@hospiceuk
Proud sponsors of The Grizzly 2024 🏃♂️🏃♀️🌿 WBW Solicitors is thrilled to support this iconic 20-mile trail race in the heart of Axe Valley on Sunday, 17th March. A true test of endurance, spirit, and community support. Best of luck to all participants! #TheGrizzly2024
My first BBC production, since leaving the BBC! This is a very moving story on the Witness History strand on the BBC World Service ( a great place to find unusual stories and less than 10 minutes long!)
...and here is a lovely, brief article ( 'Peering into the darkness') from @clanglands RIP about the heart of what I do (mental health chaplaincy) @HealthChaplains@UKBHC1

.@humanistcare have you seen this twitter thread? Not sure where this leaves those without a recognised faith in their spiritual needs at the end of life? @DyingMatters
Very shocked by this. @Sue_Ryder has some excellent excellent chaplains, but it seems the ‘powers that be’ still don’t understand spiritual care. Everyone will be the poorer; patients, relatives, and staff.
Just heard that @Sue_Ryder is planning to make its spiritual care staff redundant (point of principle, not funding). Can't quite believe. No specialist bedside support, just volunteers and religious groups invited in. Really? in 2024? @hospiceuk@HealthChaplains@BBCNewsPR
Last week we marked the 75th anniversary of the NHS.
Dr Simon Harrison is Head of Pastoral and Spiritual Care and spoke to Angela about his faith...
