Grad students work hard, but claiming 80 hours/week as the norm grossly misrepresents reality and risks normalizing burnout. For those applying to PhD programs: don’t be discouraged—successful research doesn’t require sacrificing your health or life outside the lab.
There are too many bio PhD positions. Few of these graduates are able to obtain a PI position. Universities only train so many because they are cheap labor who will work 80 plus hours a week for 60 grand.
