The F4U-1 Corsair "Ole 122" of VMF-111 Devil Dogs was the only individual U.S. warplane to be cited officially for "performance above and beyond the call of duty" during WWII. Over a 6 month period in 1944, "Ole 122" flew 80,000 miles in 100 combat missions and spent 400 hours in the air with never once having to turn back because of mechanical trouble. The citation also stated: "Were there blood in her fuel lines instead of one hundred octane, she would be wearing the Purple Heart." #WarplaneWednesday

"Frank Robinson slid into third base hard, like he always does no matter what the score may be & into Eddie Matthews. Matthews jumped on top of Frank & punched him in the eye. It swelled out to here & nobody thought Frank could possibly play the second game of a double header that day. But when the game started, there was Frank in the lineup. Not only did he hit a home run to win the game, but he also made a catch and fell into the left field stands, on a ball that Matthews hit, incidentally, that saved the game. Frank got a standing ovation & I guess that's one of the biggest thrills I've ever felt in baseball" Vada Pinson

Story by Mark Grace.... "Rick Sutcliffe gave up back-to-back HR`s in Cincinnati. And in Cincinnati, they shoot off fireworks after a Red hits a HR. Sutcliffe was pretty intense on the day he pitched. So Eric Davis takes him deep & Paul O'Neill takes him deep right after that. So Sutcliffe is all mad, & pitching coach Billy Connors comes out to the mound & Sutcliffe yells at him "I know I gave up back-to-back home runs, but get your ass back in the dugout and tell Zimmer to settle down too!" Billy looks at him & says, "I know you have everything under control, Rick. I just wanted to give that guy running the fireworks a little more time to reload." Legend

After I won 21 games, I said, "This isn't that hard actually. I can do this every year for maybe 10, 15 years". To tell you the truth I thought I was going to be in the HOF. I really thought that. You feel so strong, so powerful walking down the street. You know you can throw a ball harder than any man in the world, or certainly the top five. Sandy Koufax knocked all of us out of the box on that one, so we would think, "I'm the second or third hardest thrower in the game." Jim Bouton

We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of Hall of Famer Willie Mays, one of the most exciting all-around players in the history of our sport. Mays was a two-time MVP, 24-time All-Star, 12-time Gold Glove Award winner, and a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In commemoration of "The Catch" as perhaps the most famous play in the history of the Fall Classic, the World Series MVP Award was named in his honor in 2017. Mays was 93 years old.

Parnelli said kiddingly that he could've won more races if he hadn't saved him. This picture hangs in Sprint Car HOF.

65 Riverside 500: Parnelli dropped out of a 3way duel between himself AJ and Dan. AJ spun/rolled where Parnelli was standing. AJ was unconscious-not breathing. A doctor thought AJ was dead. Parnelli alone noticed grass/dirt in AJ's mouth and he cleared airway. PJ saved AJs life.

STAND ON IT MONDAY. Brands Hatch 6-Hours, July 30, '67. Phil Hill (No. 1 Chaparral 2F Chevrolet). It would be the last international sports car race for the Chaparral team, and it resulted in a monumental win for Hill and co-driver Mike Spence. READ MORE: autoextremist.com/fumes1/

"Carl Yastrzemski is a dull, boring potato farmer from Long Island who just happened to be a great ballplayer. But he was the worst dresser in organized baseball. He made Inspector Clouseau look like a candidate for Mr. Blackwell's list of "Best-Dressed Men". He had the same London Fog raincoat during his entire career. We'd throw it in trashcans all around the league, and somehow it mysteriously made its way back." Bill Lee
