Great to be at @EducationFest today in the sunshine (but not as hot as earlier in the week, thank goodness! 🥵) It’s been fantastic to see colleagues from across the sector, get insights from schools and see @TeachFirst colleagues at our tent - come and say hello! 👋

We talk a lot about the recruitment crisis in education; about the inability to find enough applicants to fill our ITT courses. But it’s as much a retention crisis as it is anything to do with recruitment. 🧵 (1/5)

Some of this is pretty damning. It seems to be an inconsistent picture, as some schools are managing innovation and success in approach to flexibility

More than one-third of female school staff had their requests for flexible working turned down, @unisontheunion research suggests tes.com/magazine/news/genera…

This is fantastic news
The Children, Young People, and Schools committee of @BrightonHoveCC has voted to approve the creation of a new priority group - children eligible for free school meals - in the secondary school admissions process in the city. We believe this is the first time this has happened.

This is worrying because it puts leaders in more difficult positions than before.
💥💥💥 The government has issued guidance today that the Department for Education’s own lawyers said last week would leave schools facing legal challenges they would likely lose Despite the warnings, the relevant guidance was unchanged when signed off by Number 10

Tim was the best of us. Brilliant, in the truest sense of the word. A profound loss, in this moment, but only because his whole life has been education’s gain. Much love to you all @HarryBrighouse1 x
This is formal but here goes. The family of Sir Tim Brighouse are very sad to announce that Tim died in the John Radcliffe Hospital today after a short illness. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather and a towering figure in the word of education. 1/

This is a fascinating observation from Sam, especially relevant in light of the immigration reforms announced today.

Replying to @Samfr
Here's the most important chart. It shows the UK is the *only* country in Europe where second generation immigrants outperform non-immigrant students. (And first generation don't do much worse).

Attendance from Two Sides During 12 years of headship, in two different schools, managing pupils' attendance was always a priority. Improving attendance was often on our school development plans. In our school prospectus, I said things like "Every day is unmissable!". 1/10

We need to be talking more about this - but in really concrete terms. How can we make it more central? More visible? More externally valued?
This really is key: just tackling workload and behaviour is only dealing with "push" factors but the system needs to attend just as much to belonging, support and trust to create "pull" factors

Such a great write up on the book in today’s Guardian. Massive thanks to the contributors, my copy editors @rozburrows and Rianna Wilson and my book designer Rachel Lawston because without all of you, this book would just be an idea. theguardian.com/education/20…
