The Pentagon has banned journalists from its press office, saying it is now a classified space. A spokesman said it had been "redesignated as a Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility" because Pete Hegseth's speechwriters were now sharing the room. Last year the New York Times won a legal challenge against restrictions on access for journalists - although the defence department then barred reporters from entering without an official escort.
