Today I have a short blog post on something in game development that took me far too long to realize: that DeltaTime is a frame behind. theorangeduck.com/page/delta…

🚀 Exciting news! DirectX is adopting SPIR-V to enhance cross-platform compatibility. This shift allows Microsoft and hardware vendors to focus on features that will power the next generation of applications. Read about it here: devblogs.microsoft.com/direc… #DirectX #SPIRV

If you missed @nicolefeng_'s brilliant paper on generalized signed distance at #SIGGRAPH2024, here's a 20 second summary. 📺🎧 In short: nice SDFs even from "garbage" input geometry. You can read all about it in her nice blog-style writeup here: nzfeng.github.io/research/Si…

Builtin strings are an obvious shortcoming in C... but you can make your own! There are 2 main alternatives: dynamic arrays & slices. Slices are the best approach for general-purpose, largely because substrings are free: you can iterate lines in a file without extra allocations

The downside of programming in C is that you *have to* write your own primitives. The best part of programming in C is that you *get to* write your own primitives.

The perception of safety in American cities is disconnected from actual safety. Most Democrats think all cities are safe except Detroit and Chicago. They are wrong about New Orleans, Atlanta, and Philapdelphia. Most Republicans think all cities are generally unsafe, except a few Red State cities like Dallas, Houston, and Miami. They think most Blue State cities are particularly unsafe, except Boston. Yet, NYC and SF are extremely safe and LA quite safe, while Miami and Atlanta are not. 3 times more Republicans think Dallas is safe compared to NYC, yet the murder rate in Dallas is over 3 times that of NYC.
Americans have a very distorted perception of how safe a city is.
