One year ago, Alexei Navalny was murdered because he refused to surrender—to corruption, to tyranny, to the fear that keeps so many silent. He stood for democracy in a nation where speaking truth is a death sentence. He was jailed, beaten, poisoned—and still, he fought on.
Putin may have ended Navalny’s life, but he could not erase his defiance. He could not undo the courage Navalny inspired in millions. History does not bend to dictators; it bends to those who dare to change it.
In Navalny’s honor, I led the effort to rename the street outside the Russian Ambassador’s residence Alexei Navalny Way—a permanent mark of resistance in the heart of our nation’s capitol—because America must always stand with those who fight for freedom, whether in Russia, in Ukraine, or anywhere tyranny seeks to tighten its grip.
Navalny’s story did not end in a prison cell. His fight is now ours—to remember, to honor, and to continue.
